My 10 year old Golden Retriever, Henry, had a seizure back on the 5th at 4AM. It only lasted a couple of minutes and he snapped out of it. I just happen to go to church with my vet, so I talked to her about it and she just said to keep an eye on him. If he only had a couple small seizures a month, she didn't see the need to put him on any meds.

He had his second seizure last Saturday morning, ironically around the same time, 4AM. He came out of that one about like he did his first one. Then, this morning, around 2AM, Henry seized again, followed by another at 4AM, and then at 6AM, he began a seizure that would not stop. We stayed up with him, wiping his mouth as he frothed, cleaning up messes he made when his bowels and bladder would lose control. Finally, at 7:45AM, we loaded him up and carried him to the vet. Tania, our vet, had not arrived yet, but was on her way. They called her on her cell and she had the vet tech give Henry a shot of Diazapam to see if that would bring him out of the seizure. It didn't work. Tania finally arrived, administered a second shot of Diazapam, which finally got the seizure to stop. Henry was totally exhausted from all the convulsing and continued to pant rapidly. Tania said that the duration of Henry's last seizure was not a good sign, that he most likely had a tumor in his brain triggering the seizures. She said we had two options, one being putting Henry on a Diazapam drip to see if it would break the seizures, the other putting him down. She said that even if the drip brought him out of the seizures, it would be a week or less and he would likely seize again. We decided to end Henry's suffering, and Tania assured us that that was the right decision.

I've had to put dogs and cats down before, but this one has been exceptionally rough, probably because Henry's last few hours we so hard on him (and us.) I know we did the right thing for him, but I'm having a really hard time with it. It's ironic. I HATED that dog the first two years we had him. Then one night, I came home a little tipsy, and we bonded as I sat with him on the kitchen floor. Ever since then, Henry has been my constant companion and buddy at home. I am going to miss him.

R.I.P. Henry.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm very sorry Dave. I know from personal experience how heartbreaking what you just went through can be. Knowing you did the right thing does not make it any easier.

Oh Dave, I am so sorry! My heart is breaking with you and your family right now. I do not handle these situations oh too well myself and was so connected to my dog that when I had to put him down after 16 years, I had him cremated. He had a lot of ST Bernard in him and loved the snow so one day I will scatter him during a bad storm but it's been years and I still have him near my bed in a very special tin with a prayer paper... our pets are truly the best friends one can have!

Oh Dave, I am so so sorry. You have me crying. I raise and breed Goldens and always have from 3-6 at a time. They are the family, and gosh I know how your heart feels now. I am so sorry. You are right about the rainbow bridge, it saves me over time. I keep saying I'm so sorry. Dave my heart hurts for you. RIP HENRY. I was just reading Susea's post, and chuckled, as I have many a cannister on my dresser from all my Goldens that have passed, and when the day comes they will be scattered with me. LOVE YOU DAVE AND HENRY. My love to the girls and your wife. Here's a big big back breakin pants ripping hug for you. You hang in their today and have all good visions of you and Henry.

Dave, sorry to hear the sad news after reading your post, man. The hardest thing in this world is losing a loved one, in whatever form. Pets are family and constant, un-waivering companions.

I completely understand the bonding part. When you're hangin with your best, furry little buddy, and they look up at you with those eyes, and you lock eyes, you connect, and there is an unspoken flow of love between you that is equally understood. A common language becomes completely unnecessary.

That is the power of love. It happens in human relationships, pet relationships and it also happens in music, which is what brings us all together here.

Endings are so tough whether they are long and drawn out, or short and unexpected. Neither way is any tougher or easier, and each have their own set of difficulties.

Unfortunately our lives are full of endings that we can not change, and even our own end wil cause greif in those left behind. We can only take solace and comfort in that fact that we were and are fortunate to have and have had those experiences with those individuals; either upright and walkin' or furry on all fours.

I think every instance of loss, is a reminder to love those still among us and treat them well everyday.

Sorry for your loss, dude. I think we all feel ya.

Peach

Bless you for having the courage to do the right thing for Henry. It doesn't make it any less hard to deal with though.

There is a line form a song by the BareNaked Ladies...."Anything loved can be lost". It is true. I hope you can hang in there, and that you will feel better soon.

Mitch

Dave, from a dog lover who cherishes that enthusiastic greeting when I get home each day, my sincere condolences. Dogs are truly man's most loyal friend. No strings attached - just love me, and oh - is it time to eat?

You get to borrow their company for a short time.

Sorry about Henry.
