A "Carnival" Of Beatles
Monday, Nov 17, 2008 10:19AM
Not only does a mythological "lost" Beatles track exist, Paul McCartney says it's time for fans to hear it.
McCartney told the BBC he wants to release "Carnival of Light," a 14-minute experimental track the Fab Four recorded in 1967 but never released. The recording was made at Abbey Road studios when McCartney asked the other members of the band to "just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it. It doesn't need to make any sense."
The band played the recording for an audience just once, at an electronic music festival in London. It reportedly includes distorted guitar, organ sounds, gargling and shouts of "Barcelona!" and "Are you all right?" from McCartney and John Lennon.
"I like it because it's The Beatles free, going off piste," he told the BBC in a radio interview to be broadcast Thursday. Extracts of the interview were published Sunday in The Observer newspaper.
McCartney said he still had a master tape of the piece and "the time has come for it to get its moment."
Even though Macca is largely known as the Beatle responsible for the band's melodic hooks, he told the BBC he had a long-standing interest in avant-garde music. He said "Carnival of Light" was inspired by experimental composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
He said he had wanted to include the track on the Beatles' Anthology compilation, but the rest of the group shot down the idea. McCartney would need permission from Ringo Starr and the widows of Lennon and George Harrison to release the track.

Something gives me the feeling that somewhere in some back room they have a whole bunch of unreleased Beatles songs. It seems like they come out with the last unreleased Beatles song or material every few years.

I have a feeling that it was held back all these years for a reason. Probably CARNIVAL OF LIGHT is not the most memorable thing that came out of the Sgt Pepper Sessions, and therefore can't hold a candle to the best music to come from that psycedelic era. Once it is released the fans will listen to it a few times then file it away.

Well, I for one am certainly excited. I loved Free As A Bird and Real Love. The Anthologies were EXTREMELY well done indeed.....and more unreleased material is always a treat........

For me, this is like finding that lost Robert Johnson track. I don't care if I only listen to it 1 time, I want to hear it! It's hard to believe it's been 40 yrs. since those 4 lads were even in a studio together.

Yes, please keep in mind that this is really "Revolution 9" before they did "Revolution 9". It's never been bootlegged, but its existence was confirmed back when The Complete Abbey Road Sessions book by Mark Lewisohn came out back in 1989 or whenever it was. It was actually later than that I think.

Anyway, in Beatles circles it's a legendary track only because the fact that of all the sessions tapes, this has never been bootlegged in the slightest. And interesting to hard core fans just to hear Paul McCartney lead the full band through his "avant guarde" take on things, since it was always thought that Lennon was the only one to be into that.

Also of note the track itself is technically untitled. The Festival that they made the track for was called the Carnival of Light Festival, so it's been referred to as "Carnival of Light" as a song title. It seems to be an appropriate title.

I have heard a small snippet of something that was allegedly the track many years ago (I do believe it to be legitimate). And I would love to hear the whole track nicely mixed, but it won't be of much interest to most people. And I'm not sure that Ringo, Olivia and Yoko will approve its release.

Lastly on the comment of what they have sitting in the vaults still... There isn't much, as far as unreleased songs, completed outtakes or anything like that. Obviously they could issue every take of every track and people would be interested, but there are only a few things that are "finished" or very close that haven't been released.

I think they should leave it in the vault. It's not like it is a song like Free As A Bird or Real Love. It's just some BS that was probably recorded by accident when some engineer left the tape rolling. Its not a jam.... Whats the point? Does Paul still believe that Beatle fans will still buy anything that has their name on it? Just my opinion.

Cool -- never knew there was such an animal -- will be right on that one for sure -- it was cool when CSNY released the complete 15 minute jam of Almost Cut My Hair on their late-1980s box set -- the sound of this sort of reminds me of that a little
