Just heard on the news that consumers will lose close to $100,000,000 by holding gift cards they haven't used yet...for stores that are now CLOSED/Out of Business....ouch.

Now that is a pretty big number, not sure if I believe it...but the bottom line is, do not sit on those cards, use 'em or lose 'em.

A hassle???? How about just being thankful that someone thinks enough of you to give you a gift AT ALL!! By the way, you can use a lot of gift cards online (e.g., Barnes and Noble)....or is that too much of a hassle too?
Maybe there's a "backlash" because of people who believe they're "entitled" to a gift at all....and that it MUST be convenient because it is all about ME ME ME, isn't it?
Where's the gratitude, people? <sigh>

Hell, I don't mind getting "Gift Cards" , actually I prefer them. Believe me, they don't go to waste around my house, they get used.

I like gift cards, giving them and getting them. I've given Visa or American Express gift cards to my niece, nephew and other kids and they love them. The younger ones think they're getting their own credit card. Not all have expiration dates, but you do need to check and keep track of that, and I don't know what the heck Tarzan is talking about the purchase having to be for the exact amount. If you don't use it all the first time you shop, you have the balance left as a credit. I'll consider the source on that one

Stores going out of bus. Is not the worst of it. You but the card and give it to someone. They do not use it in time and the card exspires. No good anymore. Now they, the store, know this and its their way to get your money and not sell you anything. This is one of the best scams and its legal. You tell me.

I prefer to give cold, hard cash - that way they can spend it wherever they like, not committed to a specific store that you may like but not them.

Not sure about giving kids cards that resemble credit cards.......start 'em off early

Hope to get enough to buy the full seasons of Rocko's Modern Life and Hey Arnold!

Hard to believe I am 50 years old and still love cartoons.

I love that Eastern European dude who's boarding with them . . . my two favorites were where he's learning how to read, and the one where he gets a paper route and cajoles Arnold into doing all the work.

Haven't seen Rocko all that much, but I do remember one hilarious scene where Rocko goes to dinner at his cow friend's house, and drops the bomb about his cow friend being adopted by this wolf family (the cow hadn't figured out he was adopted, apparently).

One of the worst gifts I ever received was a $100 amazon.com gift card.

$100 to spend at amazon...it took me a week to figure out what I was going to buy....couldn't make up my mind!

Love gift cards - much better than exchanging that something-you'd-never-dream-of-wearing or won't-ever-use-this type of gift! That being said, you do need to keep in mind the vendor you are purchasing the card through. A lot of businesses going under lately and gift cards purchases will not be honored. I only buy gift cards with businesses that I'm pretty sure won't be taking a hike or the VISA/AMEX cards Terri mentioned are nice because they're good anywhere.

When I was working I used to get nice gift cards to Macy's and Bloomies',
but I wanted to use them for something special,, so I kept them for several
months. I kept a Bloomies' gift card for two years and they wanted to reduce
the amount. I went to a manager to complain and generally make a pain in
the ass of myself. That usually works and they did honor the full amount.

I used to spend a lot of time searching for the perfect gift for each person.
I don't have the energy for that anymore. I think I'll send Visa gift cards. I don't
have the holiday spirit. I am still very sad from my sister's death last summer.
It won't be a happy holiday without her. I gave a Visa card to a friend's daughter
for her HS graduation and she was thrilled. She bought an outfit with it.
