Here's a fun thread for a Friday. Best "covers" recorded by another artist.

Here's a few to get things started.

Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" (Bob Dylan)
Johnny Cash "Hurt" (Nine Inch Nails)
Mindy Smith "Jolene" (Dolly Parton)
Johnny Winter "Highway 61 Blues" (Bob Dylan)
Steve Earle "I'm Looking Through You" (Beatles)
Dolly Parton "Shine" (Collective Soul)
Del McCoury Band "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" (Richard Thompson)

There are lots, for sure - but one that has always stood out for me is Yes' cover of "America" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Lonoman, you forgot to add the orginal artist. Which in the case of "Summertime Blues" was Eddie Cochran.

As I frequently mention in threads like this, some of my favorite covers can be found on Chris Smither's album "Another Way to Find You."

That album has excellent "alone and acoustic" versions of Dylan's Down in the Flood, Jimmy Reed's Big Boss Man, Grateful Dead's Friend of the Devil, Chuck Berry's Tulane, and last but not least, Blind Willie McTell's Statesboro Blues - probably my favorite version of this tune.

Unfortunately, while I love all of these covers, Smither's own compositions don't do it for me.

Too many to really list but right now I've been listening to Levon Helm sing Bruce Springsteen's " Atlantic City " and the DTB's new Down in the Flood cover almost nonstop.

I always liked the JGB doing Simple Twist of Fate .

I think my favorite band that is known for covers is the Radiators. They pull covers out of nowhere that are so much fun live.

If we're talking radio play,Hendrix's rendition of All Along the Watchtower can't be beat.

Springsteen "Who'll Stop The Rain" by John Fogerty....

and the whole Detroit Medley. Man, I'd love to see the E Street Band dust that one off again.

Just an FYI, Doug...All Along The Watchtower is a Dylan tune, not a Beatles song.
