LOOKIN' FINE AT 59 AND SOUNDING EVEN SWEETER

Happy birthday, Ms. Bonnie Raitt! The bottleneck slide whiz emerged as a teenager in the eye of the '60s blues revival, opening for the likes Mississippi Fred McDowell and Sippie Wallace, and singing with a voice that rang with decades of maturity despite her youth. She seemed to arrive almost fully formed, a lovely creature the blues had coughed up in order to seduce us with her 12-bar ways. Once she began making albums in 1970 her range rapidly expanded to draw upon folk-blues, acoustic rock, Muscles Shoals soul and more of America's rich musical melting pot. From the start, Raitt has possessed an unerring knack for picking her collaborators, and in turn always elevates the proceedings when she sits in with any of her chums. She's also an inspired interpreter of other's songs, often getting inside them in a way that equals or betters the originals. While her sound has smoothed out and settled into a comfortable groove in recent years, there remains that initial integrity and grit that first snagged our ear. We love her as a survivor, carrier of great traditions and for her abundant natural talents. Glad we get to share this lovely blue-green planet with you, Bonnie!

A young Bonnie with Lowell George

Happy Birthday!

The first time I saw Bonnie, her father came and sang "Oklahoma" for the encore...

I remember being really excited about the chance to see Bonnie at this venue, and nobody I asked to go with me had ever heard of her. Finally, "L", (My future wife-ex) said she would go,-- "But it had better be worth it, cause I don't know who this Bonnie person is"...we saw her every time she was within 50 miles of here.

Thanks again Bonnie!

We've seen Bonnie on many occasions and every one was a good time.

We once saw her in a small club in Santa Cruz, Ca. a week after she had played a small club in San Francisco on Valentines day. She told us how she had stood at the door that night and placed a heart sticker on every guy entering the club. She said that there wasn't a guy in the club that didn't have a heart on!

Another time we saw her open for The Jerry Garcia Band at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, Ca.where her father was seated in the V.I.P. section. She made him stand up to be recognized (probably embarrassing him).

About a week after that show, a friend of ours caught her at Ceasar's, Lake Tahoe at a dinner show. After playing for a while over the sounds of silverware and glasses tinkling, she broke out in uncontrollable laughter. After composing herself, she explained what the "cosmic joke" was to the audience telling them "Last week I opened for the JGB, and I just want to tell you people, those Deadheads know how to DANCE!"

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart!
