This topic was inspired by another thread I recently replied to as it got me thinking......

Back in the distant days of the late 1970s, Rolling Stone magazine had a list of bands & pop artists that they considered "wimp rock," meaning those bands that couldn't rock or merely delivered "fake rock." Too many ballads and slow songs. Too many love songs. Bland bland bland.

Such artists on that list included: SEALS & CROFTS, America, Loggins & Messina, Bread, Kansas, Moody Blues, The Association, It's A Beautiful Day.

Who do you consider the "wimps" of rock n roll????

(by the way the above is NOT my opinion. The list was published in ROLLING STONE. I think it was also published in a book called ROCK LISTS. I will try to track down the entire list if I can find it, and post it here. I have continually disagreed with their opinions and so I don't agree with many of their choices above.)

**UPDATE**

Here is the complete list from ROLLING STONE from a more recent source, the 90s. There was an earlier version from the late 70s or early 80s but I have to loate it.
Please don't shoot the messenger, I'm only passing on the information.

Before I respond, are those who might like some of the aforementioned artists also considered wimps?

The Moody Blues weren't wimpy!

I agree with Bhawk on the Peter Cetera thing.

Allrighty then. Dan Fogelberg and Fleetwood Mac. And though their sound may not appear wimpy, I never pass up an opportunity to bash Boston.

I don't think there's a such thing as "wimp rock". Granted there's was a lot of what could be termed as "soft rock" and some of it was quite good, while other artists in that "genre" pretty much stunk. Truth be told, you could say the same thing about bands and artists in every genre of rock music be it Hard Rock, Metal, Southern Rock, Soft Rock, Top 40 Rock, whatever. Remember there is good and bad in all of it. The trick is, is to judge the music on it's own merit, and not so much in how hard it rocks.

How does Wimp Rock of the 70's compare with Whiney-Ass Rock of the 2000's?

Whiney-Ass Bands:

Cold Play
... okay, so it's a one-band genre!

Recycled Elton John is to Coldplay as recycled Steve Miller was to the Spin Doctors as recycled Springsteen is to The Wallflowers.

All that recycling! Is this all a result of the "Green Movement"?
