Police: Shooter feared trick-or-treater was robber
By MEG KINNARD

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

Quentin Patrick, 22, is accused of killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw on Friday night. T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell, were injured but were released after being treated at a hospital.

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt.

Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.

Patrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.

He told police he had been robbed and shot in the past year.

"He wasn't going to be robbed again, and he wasn't going to be shot again," Patterson said Saturday at a news conference.

She said T.J., a bright young man, suffered multiple wounds, including a fatal shot to his head. No one answered the door at the family's home Saturday.

"This is by far one of the worst tragedies that I have had to personally experience," Patterson said. "It happened basically because kids were out doing what they would normally do on Halloween."

Patrick has been charged with murder, three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, and one count of assault with intent to kill.

Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home, Ericka Patrice Pee, with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. Patterson did not give an explanation for the money.

Pee's 2-year-old daughter was inside during the shooting and is now being cared for by family members.

Patterson said Patrick had multiple drug convictions but police do not believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the shooting. Authorities did not know if Patrick or Pee had attorneys. Both are being held without bond.

A man who identified himself as Patrick's brother but declined to give his name said in a call to The Associated Press that he believed Patrick was suffering from post-traumatic stress after a break-in last December. The man's account matched the information police provided.

"We want to let his family know that this is a total tragic accident," he said. "He was trying to protect his family."

Patrick's home is off a busy, two-lane road in Sumter, a city of about 40,000 people. On Saturday, shattered glass still covered the front stoop and about 20 bullet holes peppered the front door and a front-window casement. A firefighter used a hose to wash bloodstains away.

The shooting shocked residents of a neighborhood where most people know each other well.

"I just hate it that that little kid got killed. It used to be the quietest place. I knew everybody and everybody knew me," said Vivian Johnson, 81, who lives two doors from Patrick and Pee but said she did not know them.

County Councilman Charles Edens said he lives just a few blocks away and passed the crime scene on his way back from trick-or-treating with his 13-year-old daughter, who was upset by the news.

"It's going to put a dampening on Halloween," Eden said. "I would think twice about going to a door that we don't know who lives behind."

What is an ex-con doing with an assault rifle???

Going out on a limb here..............

I'm betting the weapon was obtained illegally, the money was from drug sales, and this is one loser meth head.

Someone knocks on the door and he goes Scarface on him?????

Lucky only one person died.

Meth is the first thing that came to my mind, too, Ron - such a paranoid reaction - emptying an assault rifle through a locked door that you haven't bothered to check for who's knocking on Halloween during trick or treat time when you have your porch lights on. And yes - it's amazing that nobody else was killed here.

They do not believe he was under the influence???? Did they bother to TEST the sorry mother f**ker for drugs, or are they just going to ASS-U-ME?

And YES....what is a convicted felon (I am assuming he's a felon) doing with an AK and not getting a felony gun possession charge?

Unloading over 29 rounds from an AK-47 to scare off burglers. This piece of sh!t had intent to kill. There should even be more charges because of the 2 yr old who was in the house. The mother only got an obstructing official business running with the money?

Another bad part to this story from The State newspaper in Columbia is that when he was shot, the mother ran up to him lying there and his legs were still moving, she pulled off his Halloween mask and there was a bullet hole were his eye used to be. Horrible thing for the mother, her other son and husband have been released from the hospital after treatment of their wounds.

The story doesn't give specifics on his record, but with his 19 year old woman running away with $7500, I think it's a safe bet that it was illegal drug money. If he ain't usin', he's sellin'. How many 22 year olds do you know that have $7500 cash layin' around?

BDOB I'm not trying to defend this scum. Just the topic came out of why he wasn't charged on the firearm thing, so I thought maybe he didn't have a felony conviction.

The circumstances don't paint him very well: drugs, money, guns, already been shot and robbed once and a short fuse? Doesn't take Monk to figure out what this guy was all about.

That's a sad story. Since the girlfriend left with $7500, if he owed that $7500 to someone (or a portion thereof) that person would likely come looking for it and not be willing to take no for an answer. That would explain him firing all those rounds.

Obviously it was an extreme response, but it also brings up something else. Halloween needs some revisions. Stop calling it Halloween celebrating all Hallow's Eve, though most children do not know what that even means. Stop having children dress in ghoulish costumes celebrating things of the dark world. We could have a day for children called Candy Day, where they still get to go around and receive candy but there should be some safeguards and limits on that, like curfews, get off the street at a reasonable hour. Anyone caught defacing or destroying property goes to juvenile hall, their parents pay a fine. Keep it a joyful time of comraderie celebrating the children and their joyfu innocence.

What's wrong with my response? The girl who left with the money was his girlfriend (of sorts) since her daughter was still there; and the rest of what I put are recommendations for a safer holiday for all children. I do not justify what he did or how he was living, unless it was a Blackwater team coming to seize him there really isn't a reason to fire all those rounds, try looking at the big picture. Don't just focus on part of it. What happened happened, can something positive happen after that?

Can be, yes. I got the impression from the "multiple convictions" mention that he my have
gone into some type of "Three Strikes" situation.
I'm also skeptical about the "AK-47 assault rifle". An AKM, SKS, or a AK-74 is more likely.

But, I more than anything feel for the parents and family for the loss of their child.

I suspect he owed somebody more than $7500 and the knock on the door he was expecting was the bill collector
not tricks or treats .

Turns out the guy's not an ex-con, but a convicted felon out on parole.

From "The Item"
Judge George R. Gibson denied bond Monday afternoon to alleged Halloween child-killer Quentin Lamar Patrick.
Wearing orange flip-flops, white socks and a white undershirt with his bright red prison jumpsuit-which bore the insignia of a black heart on it's lower right-hand corner-Patrick, 22, shuffled into the courtroom at the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center, head bowed, where he listened to two charges of assault and battery with intent to kill and one charge of battery with intent to kill.

Bail for a fourth charge-the murder of Tony Jereral "T.J." Darrisaw, 12, who died after ringing Quentin's doorbell for trick-or-treating-will be decided later this week.
"Because of the nature of the circumstances we are going to respect the wishes of the victims and the family and deny bond," Gibson said before a courtroom packed with media and family members.

{slight cut of article describing shooting event}

Patrick then reportedly tried to escape with the help of his girlfriend, Ericka Patrice Pee, 19, who fled with $7,500 in cash. Patrick who has three previous convictions for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, is a convicted felon and is on probation.

Sumter Chief of Police Patty Patterson said that the source of the weapon, as well as the nature of the cash, is still under investigation.

It is illegal for convicted felons to possess a firearm.
