"Rockin' Horse" (G. Allman/W. Haynes/A. Woody/J. Pearson) – 7:23

I was suprised to see that Gregg and Jack have writing credits for this song, I was not suprised to see Woody or Warren though, this song SCREAMS Mule to me. I watch the Beacon DVD all the time, and it sounds good....but many parts of the song are soo Mule. I wouldnt complain if ABB played it here at DTE, just my opinion.

Also like both, but prefer Mule version, especially Woody's reading. During the Deep End tours, I liked Oteil's version the best. I think Oteil really gets this tune. And the jam that the ABB pulls off in RH is usually a show highlight for me anymore.

Prefer the ABB version personally. I actually love the original Mule takes on it, but with the newer arrangement of the song and the 4-piece Mule, I prefer the current ABB playing it over the current Mule. (not that I dislike the current Mule's version at all)

Incidentally, Magodee, the song was written back in 93 by Gregg, Jack Warren & Allen at the same time as "Sailin' 'Cross the Devil's Sea" while Dickey was on a hiatus and Jack was filling in for him. It was written for the ABB and was actually recorded with Gregg singing (and Dickey on guitar) for the WHERE IT ALL BEGINS album, but it didn't make the final cut. I heard because Gregg was not happy with his vocal. But I had then later heard that Dickey was not a big fan of the song. Or maybe it was both.

Honestly I can't stand the song, so I'll say Mule. I think the lyrics have little poetry and the opening riff is one of the most unpleasant sounds to grace an Allman Brothers album.

Great song, Mule version though. Although I love what Butch, JJ and Marc do to that song.

Derek solos > Danny Louis solos.

I'll go with the Allmans on this one.

LOL could you imagine Dickey on this song??? I could see him storming out of the studio, pissed as hell Gregg wanted it. Anyway, I like the Mule version too, this is a good example.

I absolutely love that riff starting at 1:17 or so, anyone have a tab for it?

I have always like The ABB's version a bit better even though I am a big fan of Waren and The Mule...and now with the new Jam in the middle which creates a updated melodic side to the song, I Like it even more.

I think the main reasons why I dig the ABB version more is a couple things...first, any song that has Derek in it working his magic is always a good thing - Derek's approach always seems to border on Jazz which suits me just fine and now with the new Jam section, Derek get to explore even further in a different way. Also, while Warren is soloing I find Dereks rhythm playing to be a really nice under-current. Secondly, I like the Big Band approach with The ABB's huge percussion section. Simply said, I'll take the Jazzy swing of The Brothers to the Hard Rock approach of The Mule almost every time. Your mileage may vary...

Burn it at the stake! Give it to songless bands in India! Make Mariah Carey listen to it a million times! Make them play it prerace in the stables at the Kentucky Derby to rile up the horsies! Play it at midnight in the swamps and see if the gators go loco!

Both that and WOMAN ACROSS THE RIVER are overplayed at ABB shows. I think they both need a retirement.

ABB version for this guy. Always find Mule version to short and straight ahead but ABB version twist and turns all over the place.

Love the Mule version, but the twin guitars in the ABB version give it the edge... Maybe I just haven't been following the ABB family of bands long enough to get sick of it, but I wouldn't mind if they (either band) did Rockin' Horse twice a night!
