Tuesday night I visited my Dad at the VA hospital in Dublin, Ga. Many of you know that he's been a patient there for a long time, and we had been having problems with him not drinking fluids.
With him being a coffee affectionate, I bought a cup from the machine down the hall. Keeping most of the coffee in a styrofoam cup, I gave him the cup from the machine.
Putting his bed upright, I handed him the cup and asked him to take a sip. After sniffing that it really was coffee, he drank a few sips. He stopped when he noticed I wasn't drinking coffee too, and I acted like I was sipping from the larger cup.
As he drank, I kept pouring a little more into the cup. For around an hour, he and I sat together, drinking coffee, and I listened to his sage advise. Not that I, or he, knew of what he was talking about, but, he spoke, I spoke, took a little sip, talked a little more.
Thursday morning, at 6am, the family was called to the VA Hospital. My Dad was "not doing good". The doctors thought that he was possibly dehydrated again and they were pushing fluids into him through IVs.
When we arrived, we were told he had passed shortly after the call went out.
He was still in the bed, eyes slightly open like he was just coming awake, and looking rested.
He had just gone to sleep, and didn't wake up. There was no pain or suffering, he didn't even notice the doctors working on him.
We each had a few moments alone with him, said our prayers and cried a little.
Sunday he'll go back to the little church he helped build years ago, in a place where his mother will be at his feet, and close to two brothers and a sister.
He'll be where the old farm boy could hear the calls of bob-bob-white from the quail gathering in the hedgerow between the church and the field, sounds of tractors plowing, planting, and harvesting, the whistle and clatter of the train coming through the village, and the songs and preaching coming from his little church.

I'm glad that I will get to carry with me that memory of our last cup of coffee together.

Wow

Brought tears to my eyes and a smile on my face. By that I mean that you were able to share that cup of coffee with him. What a lovely description of the church he helped build, with the calls of bob-bob-white from the quail.

Prayers of strength going out to you and your family

That is a really touching story, Jerry, thanks for sharing it.

I was lucky enough to have similar visits with both of my grandmothers shortly before they passed on, and I wouldn't trade that time with them for all the money in the world.

You're a good son, Jerry. Thanks for reminding us what is really important.

Jerry, never forget that time that you spent with him, it will carry you through the times of missing him. Right now his spirit is smiling down on you, believe it.

So sorry for your loss. And glad you got to spend a little time with him.

Reminds me of that old song "One more cup of coffee before I go..."

...except it isn't "to the valley below." It's to heaven, where all vets go.
