Always liked Donovan. Nice soft tunes. I was blown away by the use of Hurdy Gurdy Man in the movie Zodiac. All of a sudden it was dark and haunting. Like the ABB the director heard something there in Donovan's music that I never had.

Few people realize how a pretty little English ditty became such a huge jam monster courtesy of the ABB. I laugh every time I hear the original "There is a Mountain" and think what it has become.

I would like to hear Donovan perform it live and strech it out for 40 minutes with multiple guitar and drum solos. Maybe he can ask his bass player to skat a little as well!!

Also interesting to hear what the Grateful Dead do with the song's theme around 1968 in the midst of jamming on their own tune "Alligator...."

Met someone from Dallas a couple of days ago who mentioned meeting Donovan and bringing up Mountain Jam...I didn't even know which song of Donovan's he was referring to until sang a couple of lines, then I remembered it. I never would have guessed or connected the two otherwise!

True story--a couple months ago a friend of mine came over & I was trying to impress her with my guitar playing, so I played a few notes of "First there is a mountain" and she said, "oh, I know that song, Donovan sings it" -- it's an amazing moment when anybody recognizes a tune I am playing--and I said, "umm, there's an instrumental version too, let me go get it" so that took care of the next 40 minutes or so! Can't believe she didn't know that already!

(I might have posted this before, my memory isn't so good on that part)

I like to see the ABB actually do the song in the middle of mountain jam.

I once saw Donovan in a very small club called the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA. He just sat in the corner and played. It was great. We were about 15 feet away, sitting at a table, having a pint.

This was always one of my favourites . . . . .

The Intergalactic Laxative
Words & Music by: Donovan Leitch - 1973
Performed by: Donovan
Album: Cosmic Wheels - 1973

I was impressed like everyone,
When man began to fly,
Out of earthly regions,
To planets in the sky.
With total media coverage,
We watched the heros land,
As ceremoniously
They disturbed the cosmic sand.

In awe with admiration,
We listened to the talk.
Such pride felt they,
Such joy to be
Upon the moon to walk.
My romantic vision shattered,
When it was explained to me,
Spacemen wear old diapers
In which they **** and pee.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,
Will get you from here to there.
Relieve you and believe me,
Without a worry or care.
If **** ting is your problem,
When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative
Will get you from here to Mars.

They don't partake like you and I,
Of beefy burger mush.
Their food is specially prepared
To dissolve into slush.
Absorbed by multi-fibers
In the super diaper suit,
Otherwise the slush would trickle
Down inside the boot.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,
Will get you from here to there.
Relieve you and believe me,
Without a worry or care.
If **** ting is your problem
When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative
Will get you from here to Mars.

You may well ask now what becomes
Of liquid they consume.
A pipe is led from penis head
To a unit in the room.
The water is recirculated,
Filtered for re-use.
In case of anti-gravity -
Pee gets on the loose.

Oh, the intergalactic laxative,
Will get you from here to there.
Relieve you and believe me,
Without a worry or care.
If **** ting is your problem
When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative
Will get you from here to Mars.

Wherever man has conquered,
On the quest for frontiers new,
(Da da da da)
I'm glad that he's always had to do
The number one and two.
It makes it all so ordinary,
Just like you and me,
To know the greatest heroes,
They had to **** and pee.

The intergalactic laxative
Will get you from here to there,
For cosmic constipation
There's none that can compare.
If **** ting is your problem
When you're out there in the stars,
Oh, the intergalactic laxative,
The intergalactic laxative,
The intergalactic laxative,
Will get you from here to Mars.

Got to see him open for Yes in Atlanta, August 77. Was in his "gentleman" phase, wearing a white or light yellow suit. The light show went crazy on Banana, but I do not recall him doing First ...

I read somewhere that John Lennon credited Donovan with teaching him how to fingerpick while playing acoustice guitar.

Yes, that was when Donovan went to India with his friends the Beatles in February 1968 to find some peace of mind and study Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. George Harrison celebrated his 25th birthday there and his wife, Pattie turned 24. The fab four spent a lot of time writing songs, which eventually became the White Album. Here is a limk to a photo from the trip .....

On a side note about John Lennon. Delbert McClinton claims to have taught John to play Harmonica...Pretty good company, learning from some pretty good musicians...

XM 40 Deep Tracks will play Donovan's First There is a Mountain followed by ABB's version. Usually LAFE, but sometimes the version from Then Again - Live. Cool station that I hope survives the Sirius merger.
