What are some of your classic "thinking man's" rock bands? I guess I mean in a lyrical sort of way. I never understood what the term "progressive" rock really meant, but this may be it too?

Pink Floyd
Genesis
Yes (and their offshoot bands)
Jethro Tull
Steely Dan
Rush (although a buddy of mine always slams them for the words to Trees)
Peter Gabriel

Who else? Add your own, vote for the ultimate.

It is a rather cheesy revolution metaphor, and completely oversimplified, perhaps surprising for a band that celebrates Bastille Day . . . nice music, though.

Re: the topic, The Moody Blues.

Steely Dan seemed to get the label the thinking man's rock band. Fairly well deserved.
I'd echo:
Zappa
Dylan
And don't laugh, but the Clash. They had quite a way of spinning current events at the time.

Peter Gabriel
Paul Simon
Joni Mitchell
Ricki Lee Jones
Zappa
Van Morrison
Neil Young
Grateful Dead
Patti Smith

(Heavy lyrical influences in above. And agree with the jazz comments)

King Crimson. No other rock music gets in my head like them. I have to bust out Herbie Hancock or Miles or Coltrane to get the same buzz.

I like Zappa but always thought he took himself too seriously despite his self-deprication.

In my opinion music is not supposed to make you think. It's supposed to make you feel.

LOL! Good one.

I would agree with most and second The Clash.

Mahavishnu Orchestra
Ozric Tentacles

Both groups' music forces me to think about listening just a little harder. I was always fond of Jean-Luc Ponty as well.

I can do both at once... sometimes those thoughts are the source of my feelings (girl of many talents - can also chew gum and walk. )

The Who. Some remarkable lyrics. Ditto Paul Simon and Wilco.

Some prog rock bands that have remarkably complex music have some dopey lyrics, IMHO - many Yes lyrics seem like gobbledy-gook to me.

What about BOSTON? Tom Scholtz was a genious. He had a degree from MIT. He masterminded the group in his basement studio, playing almost all the instruments on the debut album, DONT LOOK BACK and THIRD STAGE. He invented the Rock Man, which created special effects sounds for guitar.

Also his record company promoted the debut LP with the slogan "Better music through Science."

BOB MARLEY had plenty of intelligent things to say in his music. Although it was directed towards the masses, and Reggae itself was not taken seriously for decades by the rock elite, he was able to create such poignant lyrics which rang true. He was a prophet for the third world people and is considered almost holy in Jamaica and Africa.
