GOP group depicts Obama with watermelon, ribs

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A San Bernardino County Republican group has distributed a newsletter picturing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on a $10 bill adorned with a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken.

Linking Obama to demeaning racist stereotypes drew denunciations from various GOP officials after the illustration appeared in the October newsletter of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

Diane Fedele, president of the group, said she had no racist intent.

"I never connected," she told the newspaper. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."

The Obama campaign declined to comment, saying it does not address such attacks.

The newsletter was sent to about 200 club members and associates last week by mail and e-mail. The club is a volunteer group that is not directly responsible to the state party, said California Republican Party press secretary Hector Barajas, who denounced the newsletter.

Fedele said she had received the illustration in e-mails and decided to reprint it to poke fun at a remark by Obama that he doesn't look like other presidents.

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele told the newspaper. "I absolutely apologize to anyone who was offended. That clearly wasn't my attempt."

Sheila Raines of San Bernardino, a black member of the club, complained about the image to Fedele.

"This is what keeps African-Americans from joining the Republican Party," she said. "I'm really hurt. I cried for 45 minutes."

I heard about that last night on television.....someone somewhere put this together and I don't see any way it wasn't meant to be racist. It wasn't apple pie or hot dogs .

This is my favorite part:

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele told the newspaper. "I absolutely apologize to anyone who was offended. That clearly wasn't my attempt."

I love the conditional apology by disingenuous clowns. This woman is such a liar and despicable person, that words can't begin to describe it.

Once again, I wonder what those WP posters who claim there is no racism in this election have to say about this. And I wonder how long before Luke signs in to defend this, calling the offense taken "political correctness".

I'm not an Obama supporter, don't want him in the office.

That being said, I am from the South, and I know and have heard all the stereotypes and the epithets. This woman is not to be believed.

One other thing - I am glad it is California and not Alabama. It shows that this type idiocy exists everywhere.

That sounds like racism to me. I never said there was no racism. I said not enough to prevent Obama from winning and if he lost racism would not be the reason. I stand by that. And btw, this shows how the term "racism" is diminished when we apply it to really stupid things like saying the statement "Obama palls around with terrorists" is somehow racist.

Whats worse is that people like this dont even have the balls to admit their intent. They dont have the guts to stand up for their own beliefs. I would have a lot more respect for them if they just said "yeah, Im a racist, so what?". You may not like them much, but you would have to give them some credit for being honest.

If Obama was white, it wouldnt be an issue. If his name was anything other than Barack Hussein Obama, it wouldnt be an issue.

I saw that.

Whenever I see something like that I instantly dismiss it as ignorance and leave the person responsible behind to wallow in their own folly and hate.

Move forward, leave the fools to spin their wheels in the mud.

"I never connected," she told the newspaper. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."

I will never understand people who lie, when there is zero chance anyone will believe it. Not that lying is right, but if you're going to tell one, tell a good one. So she's stupid on a couple levels at least, and broadcasts it. Pathetic and despicable.

I had typed; "and you can't expect to actually believe anything this person would say with regard to defending this show of racism" at the end of my post but deleted it...figuring it was a foregone conclusion.

They just did an interview with the daughter of this woman, who defended her mother with the same excuse that it is just food. If you actually see what these things look like you can see that it is stereotyping to the extreme and certainly racist. They are called "Obama Bucks" and are made to look like a "food stamp" coupon further perpetrating the idea that ties the belief that all black people are all on foods stamps. Maybe if they would do some research they would find that the majority of people on food stamps are not black.

When George Wallace was running for President back in the early seventies, Dave Duke used a similar tactic by handing out to those donating to the George Wallace campaign a "Free Ticket Back to Africa". The ticket holder would receive a boat ride back to Africa along with a supply of banana's, hair grease and a free spear. The caricature on the ticket was of a African in hunting stance, chucking a spear. This was an insinuation that if the voter voted for George Wallace then he would run all blacks back to Africa. It was never established that George Wallace actually condoned what Dave Duke was doing, however it was never denounced by the George Wallace campaign either. What was established was that Dave Duke was actually keeping the money and never turned it in to the campaign but kept it for himself.

Then your bullsh*t meter is working properly. You can't believe it because it's an outright lie.

I wonder what Ms. Raines' next move will be?

I won't do this garbage the service of copying it or linking to it here, but a little googling will turn up the image, for those interested.

Here's a little more of the lie:

“If I was racist, I would have looked at it through racist eyes,” she said. “I am not racist, which is why it probably didn’t register.”
Club member Kristina Sandoval agreed.
“None of us are racists,” she said.
The use of watermelon, ribs and fried chicken was innocent, she said.
“Everyone eats those foods, it’s not a racial thing.”

A sad thing, all around.

I find all that the Obama candidacy for the presidency has stirred up both disheartening and inspiring. Disheartening in the sense that we really have so far to go in living out the principles this nation was founded on, even if the founders didn't quite understand the fullnes of those principles themselves. But inspiring in that this candidacy is bringing the issue right up there to the surface, exposing this darkness to the light in a manner that forces us to confront it. As I look back on Obama's speech on racism after the Rev. Wright affair, I find this candidacy inspiring, and I actually feel hopeful about the possibilites for change this gives us.
