David Bowie's "Space Oddity".

I heard this on a stupid car commercial and thought that it is near sacred rock n roll that should not be ruined for commercial purposes or otherwise.

List starts here:

1. Space Oddity - David Bowie

A slight digression, yet still tied to the main theme:

At a middle school football game last week, the dance team did a skit to a version of 38 Special's, "Hold On Loosely". I don't know who was doing this song but they just eviscerated it. I'm not typically moved to violence, but I think whoever did this version should just be ... I don't know, EVISCERATED!!!

Songs that shouldn't be covered? I was gonna say, "Layla" ... but I've heard a certain band doing that one justice!

Celine Dion must be banned from doing ANY AC/DC tune ever again (if you had the misfortune of seeing the youtube clip here recently).

Anything by Pink Floyd. As if. (No matter how good Queensryche or Dream Theater are at it.)

I would add The Who except W.A.S.P. did a cover of "The Real Me" that is beyond awesome.

I would have said that until I saw Australian Pink Floyd, who TOTALLY does the pink Floyd experience justce.

I also would have added Nancy Sinatra's " These Boots Are Made For Walking until I heard it covered by the Leningrad Cowboys.

It would seem that there are two competing thoughts on this one:

Songs that are decent that people shouldn't cover

and

Songs that suck so bad that no one should cover them

For the first category I would add:
Stairway to Heaven
Smoke on the Water
Roundabout
All Along the Watchtower

To the latter, there is just too much to put down.

Btw, I think Pink Floyd can be covered well, as can Zappa. Aussie PF is great. Zappa does Zappa is great as was Phish when they played Zappa covers. I also think the Who can be covered as evidenced by Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. I even enjoyed the Dead's attempt at Baba O'Riley.

I love when bands do covers (the ONLY band/performer that I can think of that NEVER did covers is Lou Reed/Velvet Underground) and especially when they're different from the original. Also love those tribute cd's where all these cool bands pay tribute and cover a performer.

Some of these are songs that are so bad nobody should have ever recorded them in the first place.
