I gave this alot of though this morning on the way to work and after much discussion (with myself....yeah I'm a little nuts what of it?)....I finally came down to my choice.

"All I Can Do Is Write About It"

What's yours?

Well, I don't know if it will hold up to the "ever" qualifier, but I've always liked this one:

There's something in the way she moves,
Or looks my way, or calls my name,
That seems to leave this troubled world behind.
If I'm feeling down and blue,
Or troubled by some foolish game,
She always seems to make me change my mind.

I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now,
Almost all the time.
If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
She's been with me now,
Quite a long, long time,
And I feel fine.

Every now and then the things I lean on lose their meaning,
And I find myself careening,
Into places where I should not let me go.
She has the power to go where no one else can find me,
And to silently remind me,
Of the happiness and good times that I know, you know.
Well I said I just got to know that:

It isn't what she's got to say,
Or how she thinks or where she's been.
To me, the words are nice, the way they sound.
I like to hear them best that way -
It doesn't much matter what they mean,
She says them mostly just to calm me down.

And I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
Shes around me now,
I guess just about all the time.
If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
She's been with me now
Quite a long, long time,
Yes, and I feel fine.

Lyrically? Here's a sample ...

Mr. Tamborine Man (my man Bob Any number of his tunes would do here)

Then take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

A Case of You - Joni Mitchell (one of my favorite lyricists ... again, any number of her songs)

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Into the Mystic - Van Morrison (again, a number of his tunes)

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when thst fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Come on girl...

Brokedown Palace (Rober Hunter lyrics with Jerry Garcia music - another case of many tunes by this pair)

Going to plant a weeping willow,
By the bank's green edge it will grow, grow, grow.
Sing a lullaby beside the water,
Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll.
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

In My Life (Lennon and McCartney - another pair with many wonderful lyrics)

There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

(guess I've made my point - hard for me to choose one!)

well I thought I was done but can't leave out these guys that ALSO have a way with words...

Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Have a little Faith in me
(John Hiatt)

When the road gets dark
And you can no longer see
Just let my love throw a spark
And have a little faith in me

And when the tears you cry
Are all you can believe
Just give these loving arms a try
And have a little faith in me
And

Have a little faith in me
Have a little faith in me
Have a little faith in me
Have a little faith in me

When your secret heart
Cannot speak so easily
Come here darlin'
From a whisper start
To have a little faith in me

And when your backs against the wall
Just turn around and you will see
I will catch, I will catch your fall baby
Just have a little faith in me
Well, Ive been loving you for such a long time girl
Expecting nothing in return
Just for you to have a little faith in me

You see time, time is our friend
cause for us there is no end
And all you gotta do is have a little faith in me
I said I will hold you up, I will hold you up
Your love gives me strength enough
So have a little faith in me

-----

This has been covered by numerous artists... Delbert McClinton does a nice version of this as well.

Bird Song

All I know is something like a bird
within her sang
All I know she sang a little while
and then flew on

Tell me all that you know
I'll show you
Snow and rain

If you hear that same sweet song again
will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet
is passing by

Laugh in the sunshine
sing
cry in the dark
fly
through the night

Don't cry now
Don't you cry
Don't you cry
anymore
lalalada
Sleep
in the stars
don't you cry
dry your eyes
on the wind
lalalalala........

This one would be up there on my list:

Your rain falls like crazy fingers
Peals of fragile thunder
Keeping time
Recall the days that still are to come
Some sing blue

Hang your heart on laughing willow
Stray down to the water
Deep sea of love
Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea
Swift undertow

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know
See how it feels in the end
May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you
Soft, strong, sweet and true

Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow
Tapping at the window
Touch your hair
So swift and bright, strange figures of light (note 1)
Float in air

Who can stop what must arrive now?
Something new is waiting
To be born
Dark as the night you're still by my side
Shining side

Gone are the days we stopped to decide
Where we should go, we just ride
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams
Gone, both dream and lie

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know
Feels like it might be alright
While Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you
Love still rings true

Midnight on a carousel ride Reaching for the gold ring Down inside
Never could reach it, just slips away But I try

THORN TREE IN THE GARDEN - Bobby Whitlock

There's a thorn tree in the garden, if you know just what I mean,
And I hate to hurt your feelings but its not the way it seems,
'Cause I miss her.

She's the only girl I've cared for, the only one I've known.
And no one ever shared more love than we've known.
And I miss her.

But it all seems so strange to see,
That she'd never turn her back on me
And leave without a last goodbye.
And if she winds up walking the streets,
Loving every other man she meets
Who'll be the one to answer why?
Lord, I hope it's not me, it's not me.

And if I never see her face again, I never hold her hand.
And if she's in somebody's arms, I know I'll understand
But I miss that girl. I still miss that girl.

Maybe someday soon, somewhere.

Amen to that. I was in a local theater presentation of "A Little Night Music" and that song really wraps up the insanity of that show perfectly at the end.

It was written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. Keith Whitley and Alison Krauss both made it a hit. It is a wonderful song.
