I have been wondering lately why Dangerous Dan has never guested on any shows since he departed the band nearly 30 years ago. Did he leave on bad terms? I would have thought by now he would have been up on stage a few times.

I don't think Dan left on any bad terms from ABB. He played with Gregg in the mid 80's, then came back to Dickey, and Great Southern in 2000. I don't see how anyone holds any bad feelings towards Dan. He is one of the nicest guys on the planet.

I would prefer to concentrate on all the great players that HAVE shared the stage with The ABB the past few years, especially since 2001 when Warren made his triumphant return. Jack and Chuck have been there numerous times as was Thom Doucette and Jimmy Herring and on and on and on...

Dan's a wonderful player and a cool cat but I am not losing any sleep over it. Maybe Dan was a bit miffed that Dickey asked Warren to join The ABB in 1989 and not him. We do know one thing, Dan left Great Southern on very short notice right before the tour was supposed to start...so something was not right there.

This type of stuff is all nonsense that we no control over, its a band concern, not ours...lets' concentrate on who IS there shall we?

This was not meant to be a negative thread just inquiring why Dangerous Dan a former regular member of the band has never guested for a song or two.

Warren Haynes over Dan Toler? I don't think anyone in ABB struggled with THAT choice. Not to knock Dan, but look, he's not in Warren or Derek's league. I mean, if you had a chance to date Liz Hurley or Roseanne Barr, would you choose Roseanne because she was nice?

I like Dan, he brought me out and ice cold can of Coke back in the GA tour days when I had a spot right in front of him and wasn't willing to give it up to go get a drink.
Finally got to tell him thanks last year at the Dallas Guitar Show face to face instead of yelling "thanks" like I did that night. Loud appreciative crowd in Kansas City.

Dan also did "Gregg & Friends" dates in the early/mid 90s with Gregg, after the ABB reunited with Warren. I have a suspicion we'll see him up there next year.

Here is some Dan in recent years with one of his numerous bands, Brothers of the Southland, jamming out to Can't You See (from 4:48 to end Danny gets burning).

Agreed, is it possible that Dan has been asked by the ABB...and is just being loyal to his friend Dickey by graciously declining the invite?

Gregg once told me " I miss the Toler Bros"

Unfortunately Frankie is very ill and -=DDT=- has been doing all he can to support his brother

Trust me, Dan is as "Dangerous" as ever,
but for reasons unknown, he is lumped in with
Dickey, Augie and Buddy

new mgt dont like old br'ers (IMHO)

Warren and Derek got that slide thing going on, but that in no way is any demerit on the excellence of Danny as a guitarist. He blew everyone away when he played with Dickey in the late 70's. He is awesome, and it would be incredible to hear him and Jack and Derek and Warren all on one stage.

I love Dan Toler's playing. His last stint with Great Southern was spectacular. His playing has
continued to grow and improve.

He didn't leave

He was fired by Mr. Betts. He had a conflict with the rehearsal schedule
so he was fired. That is my understanding of what happened. Dickey
said something about a "lack of commitment."

is there more to it? who knows.

It sure wasn't the playing, He was really cooking.

and Yes he is still very dangerous. Approach with caution if he is holding an axe!

I agree and Dan plays his ass off to. in fact, Dan has only gotten better with the years. He was maligned back in the day for being too much like Dickey but when i saw him with G.S. he was smoking. Dan plays with joy. He should be asked to sit in.

Danny is one of the finest people you will meet, one of the most 'dangerous' guitar
players anywhere, and he should be a guest with the ABB.

Warren has Dan's number and vice versa. Last time Dan played with Great Southern at Jaxx, Dan was on the phone with Warren to try to get Warren to sit in with GS. The Mule had played an earlier show on the Mall downtown.

But the logistics never came together. Bummer

I Hope that Warren gives him a call next year.
