I called the last Presidential debate a draw, say 5-5. I saw this one as a 9.5 -5 for Biden.

9 to 8 or 7.5 to 7 is alot closer to the truth in favor of Biden, but i give Palin alot of credit you all thought she would self destruct well she didn't and if Palin said Maverick 5 times Biden said George bush 10 times!

I'd say it was more like Biden 9, Palin 7.

Palin did better than a lot of people expected, which is surely worth something, so she should probably be above a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

On the other hand, Biden had the finest moment of his political career. To use a sports cliche, he came through in the clutch when Obama needed him the most. I'm sure there are a lot of happy people in the Obama/Biden campaign right now.

kathysmom, if you don't like Biden, fair enough. But we're not rating how much you like the respective candidates, we're rating their performance in the debate.

And if Sean Hannity is a 10, Biden should be honored to be a 0

Stephanopoulos: VP Debate Report Card

October 03, 2008 12:33 AM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: During their debate tonight in St. Louis, Mo., both vice presidential candidates Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden carefully stuck to their strategies and did very well with the strategies they had.

This was a substantive, civil, passionate and pointed debate. Neither one fed into the stereotypes about themselves.

Strategy:

Biden A

Palin A-

Biden came in ready to debate Republican presidential candidate John McCain tonight, not Palin. He repeatedly attempted to portray McCain as a continuation of George W. Bush's presidency. That is the fundamental strategy of the Obama campaign and Biden did it in every single answer tonight. Biden was coherent and consistent.

Palin also did well on strategy. She showed she could handle the debate questions, and hewed to her strategy of portraying herself as a Washington outsider who in her own words could "connect with the heartland." She aggressively attempted to paint Obama as a liberal and tried to drive a wedge between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Biden on the issue of Iraq.

But Biden gets the edge here because if McCain can't convince voters he's taking the country in a different direction than President Bush, he cannot win this race -- and that's the case Biden made effectively tonight.

Style:

Palin A

Biden A-

From the minute Palin walked onstage and said, "Nice to meet you, Joe -- can I call you Joe?" she had her performance down. It was very winning and very appealing and we saw that throughout the debate. She also tried to wink to the audience about four or five times and you got the sense that she really was connecting with the people back home.

Biden had a more just-the-facts style. But the majority of the voters in the country agree with him over Palin on key issues. At one point the Delaware senator appeared to get emotional when talking about his children -- a key reminder his son, Beau Biden is going to Iraq. When Palin misidentified Army Gen. David D. McKiernan, commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, as "McClellan" Biden bit his tongue -- a gentlemanly move.

Accuracy:
Biden B
Palin B

Both made some misstatements. When Biden said Obama never said he'd meet with the president of Iran, he was wrong there. When Biden said that McCain voted exactly the same way as Obama on a tax vote he was wrong there. Palin was wrong when she said that Obama has voted to increase taxes 94 times and when she said the government under Obama would take over health care.

Overall, Palin didn't freeze or make any major mistakes. She talked about herself more than Biden talked about himself, likely to reassure voters who don't know the Alaska governor well. Biden didn't go on too long and was never boorish.

However they were playing very different political games in this debate. Palin was speaking directly to the people back at home in Alaska, a key strategy to woo blue collar voters. But she was careful not to answer the charges Biden was making against President George W. Bush or Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

My gut tells me there will be a partisan response to this debate with Democrats arguing Biden won, and Republicans reassured by Palin's performance. However there was nothing to this debate that is likely to change the trajectory of the race.

Just way too many canned talking points and not enough substance from Palin. At least she didn't make a complete fool of herself, but some of the golly gees and winking at the camera were a bit amatuerish.

Bottom line is that Biden comes off to me as someone who could actually be our President if need be and Palin could not IMO.

My feelings exactly. She kept looking down as she was reciteing her talking points like they were on notecards.

She had very little substance and was trying to be too cute for me. Biden while not being a very exciting person had good command of the facts and didn't make any gaffes.

Totally agree with your score... she lied almost continually and failed to address most of the questions. Why was Ifill even there? Everyone was afraid of going after Palin on her non-answers and I believe Biden should have taken the opportunity to correct her as much as possible on her BS.

I would post some numbers, but it's just so hard for me to take Gov. Palin seriously. I'm sorry, I watch her as I listen to the way she responds to questions and I see a woman running for a school board seat. I have no doubt that she is bright and articulate, but isn't having gone through the last 8 years with a...... President who was in, waaaaaay over his head enough?

After a few weeks of trying to have some fun on this site I am leaving it. I came here with good intentions but have only been bombarded by people saying I am someone that used to post here under different names. I am sick of it. I have better things to do with my time than to deal with a small group of idiots. Most of the people here are nice but thay one small group is not worth my time. I did not come here to have pissing contests all the time.
Maybe you should listen to the ABB a bit more and you all might be nicer to newcomers.

Biden needed an 8, I'd say he got it.

Palin needed a 6, I'd say she got a 7.

Palin just needed to give those that WANT to support her and McCain, enough cover to do so. She more than did that. On that basis, to me she won.

I'm sure Biden would have enjoyed attacking Palin more, but his main goal was likely not to come off as condescending toward her, and he succeeded. When you're leading the game in the 4th quarter, the best thing is not to turn the ball over. At the same time, he came off as knowlegeable and amiable, which of course he is.

For others to say Palin did well by simply not self-destructing is a pretty sad commentary on the GOP's VP choice. Some pundit put her role well, she's a walking, talking bumpersticker. I'm sure she's a nice lady and all, but there are many nice soccer/hockey moms out there that would freely admit to not being Vice Presidential material. Palin may be able to delude herself on it, but I expect most voters will recognize that she's not much more than a nice lady conducting a bake sale.

My apologies in advance for being such a big meanie!

agreed. For Palin - Mission Accomplished!!!!! All she had to do was not fall flat on her face, which she certainly would have done if she was asked a second time on each question she didn't answer, but she was treated with kid gloves, as expected.

So, the Repubs are celebrating that she didn't embarrass herself.... what a wonderful measuring stick to use in selecting someone that could be the President in a year. I guess 8 years of a clown in the White House has made much of America lower the bar so far that to Republicans simply not making a fool of yourself is cause for celebration. It is disgusting that Palin is given special treatment because of her gender, such a HUGE discredit to women...some analysts are so sexist that their first comments were "she got out there and did it like a real trooper"...um, she is running for freaking VP of the USA..would you say a guy was a trooper just because he didn't end up in tears?!?!?!

Education?..."well, let me get back to the topic of energy"
my achilles heal?..."we are gonna reign in spending and we are a great team"....what????

I weep for the dumbing down of America

So, I agree......Biden - solid 8.5, Palin 4.5.....Palin if she was a man and not given special treatment 2

I would say a draw also. I thought both made some good points and did not make any real gaffes. Unfortunatley for Tina Fey, not a lot of material for this weekend. Quite a debate night as the Canadian leaders also debated last night (5 of them and I know that most of America wouldn't even know there was an election going on in Canada but there is on Oct 14th.) First time I can ever remember channel surfing for debates. Lost most of the familly about 10 minutes in. My 2 cents

While I can see why Gregallmanfan says this, the problem going into this debate is that not enough people want to support her and McCain. Brock hit it on the nose...

"When you're leading the game in the 4th quarter, the best thing is not to turn the ball over."

Obama/Biden were leading the race before this debate, and they will be leading after. On that basis, I'd say that it was a victory for Obama/Biden, because this was one of the last opportunities for McCain/Palin to change the nature of the campaign.

At this point, all Obama and Biden have to do is work hard on the campaign trail and not say anything TOO stupid, and they will be elected come November 4th.
