LOL.. good answer. Seriously though, to me, its always been a question that the person being interviewed didnt expect, like something out of their past that had not been in the media. Another good example is the classic question of "when did you stop beating your wife?".

"Madame Governor, have you heard from WhiteDove lately"?

she'd probably think it was some covert operation and reply..." I haven't been briefed on CIA operations yet"

This seems to be the new catch phrase on the right. I heard Hugh Hewitt (sp), the guy who interviewed Palin yesterday talking about the "serial ambushing" of Palin, and then mentioned Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric! It is a sad day in this country when asking a person running for VP to name a Supreme Court decision they disagree with, or to name some newspapers they read, is an "ambush."

I think "gotcha" journalism is just what you said, ST. It is asking about something from the past, or an anything that has not been examined, or was completely unexpected.

Yeah, I guess so...but I got to thinking about it because its going to be the new buzz word after tonight. I think its all relative to each person. I certainly didnt see general knowledge questions as gotcha journalism.

True, but let's not forget that the major "journalists" haven't asked alot of hard questions in a long time.

I'm no journalist, but in my world, any question is fair game on cross-examination, so long as it has some basis in fact. My questions must be related to the issue at hand, or go to the witness's credibility. The law says that a party is entitled to a "thorough and sifting" cross-examination, so doubts are resolved in favor of allowing the question. Politics is analogous to litigation, so, when in doubt, all's fair.

In prepping a witness, I always tell them I don't know can be a perfectly honest answer. Better to say that than make up BS. Ignorance is always preferable to dishonesty.

Dean, do you really need all those pictures in your sig? We've all seen them. What if everyone loaded up every one of their posts with a bunch of pictures? You're wasting bandspace with your rants anyway. Do you have to waste more, and slow down the site with your nonsense?

Couldn't you just go back to the AG, or did they kick you out of there?

And does Sarah Palin know how to spell potato????

Sure, Dan Quayle was EMBARRASSED to discover the E he added was the
wrong spelling. It also doesn't make Dan Quayle an idiot.

Dan Quayle didn't add the "E." He was holding a card, provided to him, with the incorrect spelling on it.

I don't know how sad it might be, but I don't think Couric's question should be interpreted as an AMBUSH. The fact that Palin was stumped does make people
wonder as to her competency, BUT it also doesn't make the woman stupid. OK,
so she didn't have an answer. The fact is that Sarah Palin is NOT the VICE PRESIDENT.
Palin is only a GOVERNOR in a somewhat REMOTE state of our union. Ask the governor
of Hawaii similiar questions and see what that person knows. Ask ANY brand new
governor similar questions and see what they know.

Plessy v. Ferguson. Brown v. Board of Education. Miranda v. Arizona. Korematsu v. United States. Tinker v. Des Moines. Hazelwood East v. Kuhlmeier.

That's off the top of my head. I'm just as much an average schmo as the next guy. I would like to think the person running for Vice President would have also paid attention in their history and political science classes regarding Supreme Court cases. She may be the President. There may be as many as three Supreme Court nominations that the next President will make.

If wanting that person to know something about the Supreme Court is a knock on my attitude towards Palin, I'm comfortable with that.

let's face it, we've had some real doozies on certain tickets over the years which proves that no one is above reproach or infallible.

we're all susceptable to mistakes and flaws, which begs the question, to me anyway, does the person have the integrity, the "pump" and the wherewithall to carry out his or her duties.

the more I see and hear, that leaves no one left standing of the 4.

pretty sad.

and Al Gore IS a dork.

To be fair, she was asked about Supreme Court decisions that she disagreed with, other than Roe v. Wade. She could have said anything, but she basically said "Roe v. Wade."

I wonder why she didn't think of the obvious one, Exxon v. Baker.
