I love the arrogance of most Americans to think that the market could NEVER crash. You people are idiots to think that it can't or won't happen. You being unprepared is much more crazy than me wanting to be prepared. You see, I sleep real good at night knowing that no matter what happens, I will be ok. Will you?

Or the 1000 galons of diesel fuel to drive it.
And he'll need a CDL to legally drive it! It would really be a bitch to all prepared for armageddon, then have to park your rig because you don't have the proper licensing!

There isn't anything on the list that can't be used up if nothing happens and I'm a firm believer of being prepared. As I mentioned in a different thread.....get cloth kitchen towels, cloth dishcloths and if you have a baby get cloth diapers, about three to four dozen. Get dishwashing liquid and laundry supplies....clothes pins and a clothes line won't hurt to have either.

We may look back on this thread in a year or two and laugh about all the preperations some of us made....but it's going to take a year or two before we'll really know how this is going to play out.

And a word to the wise.....if you do stock up and things continue to be available, use the oldest items first and continue to replace them with newer stock as you use it.

I think a major market crash is inevitable if some sort of bailout provision isn't passed.

I also think it's equally as arrogant and ignorant that so many Americans have no idea how what happens on Wall Street affects all of our lives on a daily basis. (Caveat - a generality - I am not calling anyone here ignorant) I just don't think that "F**K Wall Street! Let 'em fail!" is the right course of action. From the way you sound, it would seem that you deeply WANT a collapse.

Do you?

Couldn't agree more. We do it all the time to differing degrees, but are always prepared for some form of disaster.
Fuel of all types will be the currancy of choice. Propane for the home genny and the cottage and lots of fire wood. We always have at least a cut split and available for use.

Good thread, cause ya never know

I don't really think anyone wants a collapse, but I also don't think people want to have a situation continue where bailouts are necessary and we know something must be done to change the way our country does business so it won't happen again. I might borrow money to pay my bills and get me out of bankruptcy but if I continue old spending habits as before the loan, it's not going to help me or the bank that loaned me the money. Sometimes when the tornado blows through you need to take cover and let the dust settle before you start trying to pick up the pieces.

It's illustrative that item number one is a gun. Tells you something about the writer and his view of others.

Don't be one of the sheep! Get what you need now while you still can. If the market tanks, good luck finding much of anything on this list. The next time you are in Wal-mart, check out the depth of their stock. They have many items, but just not any quantity. If there was a run, they would be out instantly. You see, when it goes down, there won't be any time left. What you have, is what you will have, period.

What does owning a gun tell you about my views of others? What are trying to imply here? Obviously you don't know what your talking about because I bought my first gun this year for protection only. I don't hunt in the hood or the woods. It says to me that if you don't have a gun when it goes down, how are you going to protect yourself and your family?

I don't have any ammunition for our guns other than a few 20 gage shells. I don't think I'm going to get any. First off, I couldn't hit anything I tried to shoot for food and second, if I have to kill my fellow man to keep something I've got then I don't want to have it........nor do I want to live in a world where I'd have to kill someone who tried to take it. Other than that....I'll be prepared. MREs at my place everyone, BYOB.

Yesterday, American stockholders, that's investors, folks on eTrade, everybody, lost $1.5 trillion dollars. Twice the bailout. One day. At this rate, there aren't going to be any pieces to pick up. One nominal Dow rally (251 points as of right now) does not mark the end of the situation.

Well, I made my first run to the store today and stocked up on a few things. While I was in line I heard the lady at the register talking with a man about preparing for what might come. Considering I was at the Dollar General and they were discussing all the people they know who are starting to fill their pantry it got my attention. We're not the only ones thinking about laying in some provisions.

Now, in that spirit....did you know you can make your own brown sugar by adding two tablespoons of molasses to one cup sugar? Stay tuned for some more 'when you're out of' tips.

OK, here it is. My list of must haves in the case of a disaster.

Have a gun. Any gun will do. Just have some sort of protection. You don't want to need one and not have one.

Shelter. If you live in or near a big city, you might want to have an alternative place to hang out.

Gas. You don't want to be looking to top off when things get screwy. Just a little to get you to where you want to be. I also use it for my lantern and single stove burner when camping. These things could prove to be very useful in case of an emergency.

Food. This is a tough one. You can't store anything that needs eggs, milk, or cheese. Rice, noodles, macaroni (deluxe), beans, lots canned fruits and vegetables, soups, tea, coffee, spices, instant Kool aid, oatmeal, bread (add water only), ramen noodles, anything pre packaged or canned that can store for long periods of time (2010). I would suggest at least a 4-6 month supply of food. You do not want to be looking for food for the first 6 months. Don't forget about your pets. Many are already being abandoned due to the housing crisis. I also have about 250 Burpee seed packs consisting of vegetables and herbs. I have also purchased ball jars for canning. These seem to be getting tough to find.

Water. Potable drinking water is a must. There are mineral purifiers that they use in spas and pools that utilize silver to kill bacteria. They last for 4 months and would work quite nicely. I also have a way to store water. Get at least a 5 gallon container with a nozel at the base.

Clothes. Have plenty of warm clothes. Long underwear is strongly advised. Make sure you have gloves and hats that are made to keep you warm, not just a fashion statement. Heavy sweaters are a must. Have plenty of warm socks and underwear.

Vitamins. This is a must. Have lots of Vitamin C and multi-vitamins on hand. This could be crucial to fighting disease.

Medicine. Load up on this stuff. Cold & Flu, First aid (I suggest buying what you want instead of the cheap kits) Aspirin, Tylenol, etc. Get as much as you can.

Toiletries. Toilet paper, soap, tooth paste, detergent, lysol, shaving cream, straight razor, deoderant, you get the idea.

Foreign Currency. You should have at least $500 in foreign currency on hand. This is a hedge just in case the dollar would crash, that way you won't be penniless. I would suggest the Swiss Franc. It is the most stable currency in the world and it is the 4th largest traded. They are almost equal in value so you can get almost 1 for 1.

other. Get a ricket of wood, axe, knives, sharpening stone, tent, sleeping bags, camping gear, fire starters, bic lighters, bicycle tire repair kits (could be the only form of transportation depending on gas), games, lantern repair kit, gun cleaning kit, radio (am/fm hand crank), flashlight (solar powered)

EXTRAS: Cigarettes, liquour, chocolate, etc. These could become great trading items. There will ge a ton of Americans looking for their nicotine, caffeine, marijuana, or what ever fix they currently have. All of America will be detoxing at the same time, that alone could be dangerous.

I am sure I left some stuff out. I hope this helps anyone trying to put together an emergency stash for tough times.

Just the gun and a lot of ammo and you can get most of everything else.....lol
