I think Sen Obama will be trying to push some of Senator McCain's buttons, try to make him get angry on national TV...just shy of being antagonistic.

I think its going to be a bloodbath. I expect McCain to implode on his own.

He may, but I don't really think it will be necessary. Just give him enough rope....
After all, he can't stay on any message at this point-has to change what he said hours ago ('The economy is basically sound'. or 'Economy is not my strong point' followed by needing to rush to Washington to work it out).

I think both candidates will be slightly underwhelming given the massive amount of expectations being placed on both of their performances by their respective parties/supporters.

I believe the right contingency will say McCain was brilliant and the left will say the same about Obama.....difference being Obama actually will be.

I was just about to start a thread about the debate..

I believe this is going to be the most important few hours so far in this election. The nation's eyes have been riveted on Washington the past few days, and we still don't really know what is going on there. Tonight, Obama and mcCain will have the opportunity to tell us what is going on, as they see it, and where they stand on the various issues. I know tonight's debate is supposed to be about foreign policy, but I don't think that is what they will talk about.

I fully expect McCain to charge in like a man ready to do battle, fresh from his ride into Washington to save the world, and he'll definitely be trying to look like a strong, decisive leader. That will be his plan, anyway. I expect he'll come off looking like everyone's old uncle, who was sharp at one time, but lately seems to be getting duller and duller.

I expect Obama to attempt to look calm, professional, informed, and thoughtful. I think he will take some hard shots at McCain, as he attempts to stay on the "high road."

I think Obama will come out of the debate tonight as the clear winner. McCain has been trying to do too much the past few days, and his mind and plans have been all over the place. He hasn't been preparing for a debate. I expect Obama has.

Its will be good for the American people to hear Obama's "Whys" .
McCain may actually be doing the ol Jackie Gleason " hammmina hammmina hammina"

I believe you're right.....one of the things people tend to forget is Hillary has been running for the nomination for a long time and Obama's campaign just leveled her......McCain isn't near the candidate Hillary was.

I believe the format allows them to directly speak to each other. Obama has a great counter punch and I expect him to land a few, which will really piss McCain off.

I also expect Obama to look and stay cool as he has all the time no matter how vile an ad McCain puts out, while John McCain will stand and blink a whole lot making me think he suffered brain damage in captivity. An American hero who should retire.

McCain has been around the block a few times. I wouldn't be too sure that Obama will wipe the floor with him. The people who predict a bloodbath, or Johnny melting down have gotten theirself too emotionally invested in Obama winning this election IMO.

From the Commission on Presidential Debates:
The first presidential debate will focus on domestic policy; the third presidential debate will focus on foreign policy.

The second presidential (town meeting format) debate will include any issues raised by members of that audience, and the vice presidential debate will include domestic and foreign policy.

In each debate except the town meeting format, the candidates will be seated at a table with the moderator.

Face to Face.

Awesome

Thats not me.. Im basing my prediction on how McCain has screwed up royally in the past with regard to foreign policy issues and his 'confusion' over the basics, not just once, but several times.

I think both will give us nothing but a bunch of promises like we have heard candidates from both parties make in the past. Yadi yadi yadi...............

How many times have we heard promises from politicians that will fix Healthcare, Education, Welfare, Social Security. All I hear are promises, I want to hear some concrete answers, oh thats right, it will never happen, they are politicians.

I bet I change the channel half way through the debate.

I think Obama will win on style points, McCain will make more convincing points, Obama will be declared the winner.

Agreed. The goal for both will be not to screw up. I expect both will play it conservatively, get some talking points in and get off the stage. Debate skill is overrated in deciding on a candidate.

Still though there have been a number of defining moments in debates that are game changers such as Bernard Shaw asking Dukakis if his wife was raped and murdered would he still be against the death penalty, and Reagan turning to Carter and saying there you go again.

And I almost forgot the first debate in Chicago where JFK looked handsome and Nixon had a 5 oclock shadow making him look ugly. (Turned all the women voters off).
