I have not been here in a few days as my section of Ohio got hit rather hard Sunday afternoon by the last remnants of Hurricane Ike.

We experienced some pretty strong sustained winds with gusts up to 75 MPH.

Over 300,000 of us lost power and quite a few of us are still out, as are many businesses and quite a few traffic lights.

I live in a neighborhood with lots of trees and many of them are now missing major branches and more than a few of the older trees fell down to block roadways and in a few cases, crush cars and the upper floors of homes.

Many homes have lost roof shingles and had their gutters ripped off.

Ironic to have this kind of wind damage from Ike so far from Texas.

Our power has been out since Sunday afternoon at 4 PM. Best estimate from the power company is power may be restored sometime Saturday.

We are OK though and that is what is important. We have plenty of candles, two good flashlights with fresh batteries, and a battery powered am/fm radio to keep us in touch with the world.

What we don't have is hot water after today (our well insulated heater tank finally drained dry) or a gas stove to cook (we are electric). So we will be eating out a lot this week and I have a cold shower to look forward to as we have been dipping down to the 40's at night. Brrr.

And boy do I miss my stereo....

I'll try to check back in in a day or so. I was just wondering if any other ABBers here in the Midwest was affected by the evil Ike....

Iowa here and no power problems. The past week has been gorgeous here and next week is scheduled to be more of the same so the Ike fallout must have missed us. That is a drag you have been without power for so long, LPS!!! And very sorry to hear that there has been some property damage, too. Believe that fast43 is also suffering problems with no power in KY. Good luck in getting back to stereo soon, LPS!

I'm in northeast Ohio, south of Youngstown. Our power went out before 7 Sunday night and was out about 30 hours. Some people in our area had power on sooner, but some still do not have power yet, although that number is shrinking. They were saying that everyone in our area should be back on tomorrow or early Friday.

I feel fortunate that we only lost power for a short period and just suffered the loss of a few trees. For so many others it was a really nasty storm with very serious results.

Over 90% of the population in Cincinnati and surrounding areas including Northern Kentucky went without power for over 24 hours. As of Wednesday morning there were still over a half million homes in the dark. Things have just begun to get better late this afternoon. Duke Energy, the local electric provider, had sent many of their repair crews to Texas last week to help restore power there. When Ike hit here in Ohio on Sunday afternoon, the power company was ill equipped to handle what has become the most widespread electrical blackout in the history of the region.

Many gas stations could not pump any gas so this started a run on the stations that were not affected and many of them ran out of gas. The demand for gas was high because of all the home generators in use. Grocery stores had to throw out their perishables they could not keep cold. Ice became an precious commodity. Needless to say it's been a bit crazy in these parts for the last few days.

My friend from Dayton said that his kids in Cincy were still without power and that they are passing out ice in Blue Ash if anyone needs it.

I just got my power back an hour ago. It had been off since about 2pm Sunday. We sustained a lot of damage here in Butler Co. 3 lives were also lost. I had seen this in Texas, but never in Ohio. People here were in a panic, and blaming the utilitie companies. It was a mess.

After hanging and working at the library, I rode my bike home on a beautiful twilight dusk. Dark blue sky to the west, stars bright and clear, and a near full moon rising up over the eastern horizon. Then, I came around the corner from a distance and saw thew glow of electric light in the houses on my street. Our electric finally came on last night. Hats off to our brethren down in the Carolinas who sent repair trucks and personnel as initial offers of mutual assistance wre rebuffed by other power companies in other parts of the country. I'd like to know who it was that said no, but they haven't let that out as of yet. The folks from Carolina went through that ice storm a couple of years ago, my buddy Michael Buffalo Smith over at Gritz magazine was without electric for 9 days in Greenville, SC, so they understand the deal. The lines of 20 or so trucks from the Carolinas on the road near where I live were greeted with cheers and car horn honks and folks showed their appreciation with food and drink and tea and cookies. They damn near signed autographs. 600,000 folks still without power. Folks up in these parts usually stock up and get prepared when winter comes as a blizzard or ice storm can put you in a dangerous spot quickly where you are truly battling the elements, so many were yet to do that so early in the season. We got the high wind eastern side of Ike's remnants where the wind kicked 85 mph ass. Not a disaster as happened in Texas, but a major inconvenience to say the least.

I know. I am fortunate enough to be able to pickup four different PBS TV stations on the rabbit ears - KET ch. 54 from Kentucky, WCET ch. 48 in Cincy, CH. 16 in Dayton, and ch. 14 in Oxford. The only TV station not broadcasting is ch. 14 in Oxford. White noise, no BBC World News or DW-TV Journal News out of Germany at Midnight. Bummer. Then again, I'm glad I'm picking up any TV station after this week.

Hi there Mulehead.

My band will be playing in Oxford on Sat. Sept. 27th at the old Balcony. I believe it is now called he High Street Grill. The band is called Jerry's Little Band. If you can make it, stop by and say hello. I'm the bass player. Of course that assumes you guys have your power back by then.

Peace!

Unreal! I have seen your band at least 10 times over the last 8 years between Cincy and Oxford! You guys are great! I will be there. I have had a great time every time I've seen you Tom.

This is an 'untold' travesty throughout Southwestern Ohio and perhaps more. GRANTED....we cannot compare to the mess in Texas...however....many folks in this area have not had power for a WEEK as of tomorrow and there is LITTLE progress being shown. DAYTON POWER AND LIGHT....a once proud company has been gutted by 'carpetbaggers'...the company had a legendary response team to trouble. Now...these guys couldn't hook up a home stereo let alone an electric line. There are still hundreds of thousands of people without power as of tonite and the talk says it will be middle of NEXT week before something positive happens.

There is NO coverage from the national media...the Governor gives lip service and many sit in the DARK....as if it's some 'picnic'. Somebody needs to get the word out. YES...I'm one of the 'blessed'...I now have power but my Mother doesn't and neither to thousands upon thousand of other folks in this region. This ranks as the biggest MISSED story of a long time.

There ya go.....I've cut loose!
