I was watching the Beacon video today and....brother Butch's short-shorts seemed a little unsettling !

Maybe next time he will wear some Levis or Wranglers.

I thought Butch was seriously under-dressed on the DVD.

Not that I'd ever accept a back stage pass, but I thought Butch looked damn snappy.

Drummer's Fitness Matches Ronaldo

The physical effort of a drummer during a rock concert is as gruelling as a Premier League footballer endures during a match, according to scientists.
Blondie's Clem Burke has been monitored over an eight-year period and doctors found his heart rate matched that of players such as Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The physical demands of Burke's trade meant his heart averaged between 140 and 150 beats per minute - and went as high as 190.

He burned between 400 and 600 calories per hour during joint trials by the Universities of Chichester and Gloucestershire.

Tests included the measurement of oxygen uptake, blood lactate and heart rate in rehearsal tests and monitoring heart rate and blood lactate during live stage performances.

Dr Marcus Smith, of Chichester, said there was a clear link between fitness and performance.

"Musicians need exceptional stamina to sustain optimum output, especially when on tour," he said.

"Footballers can normally expect to play 40 to 50 games a year. But in one 12-month period, Clem played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts. If you looked at the heart rates of a Premiership footballer and Clem over 90 minutes, you wouldn't know which was which."

While footballers play once or twice a week, some drummers are doing it every day when they are on tour.

Dr Smith added: "When you consider the implications of the touring on top of the performance requirements for high-profile drummers, it is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding."

The Clem Burke Drumming Project is working with the Department of Health, Sport and Social Care to develop outreach programmes targeting overweight and disengaged youngsters.

A dedicated drumming laboratory is being built at Gloucestershire's Oxstalls campus and it is hoped other professional drummers will come forward to undertake physiological profiling.
