Definitely the best of our time, possibly of all time:

Bob Dylan

I know this is a totally subjective topic and pointless to some degree as everyone has their own opinion. But wanted to interrupt the darn political threads a bit.

So...it doesn't matter what is posted below, you are all wrong.... the answer is Bob Dylan.

I have to go with Lennon/McCartney, their songs cover so many different emotions, just amazing what they wrote over the years. I know they their songs have made my life a happier one.

yeah, I'd say lennon/mccartney. But I love Dylan and particularly his lyrics, obviously. There are so many I think are great and some are so under-rated.

I have to put Bob up there at the top of my list, also, and agree that Lennon/McCartney put out some great music, too.

And if we're talking words and music some others I'd stick on my list:

Joni Mitchell
Paul Simon
Becker/Fagen
Van Morrison
Garcia/Hunter
Rickie Lee Jones

I'll go with Lennon/McCartney

Then Stan Ridgway and Tom Waits.

I think Neil Young has written tons of good songs over the years. I would go with Lennon/ McCartney myself but have come to love many Dylan songs as well.

Y'all are talking poets, IMHO.

Best songwriter might be Dickey Betts. Maybe the Gershwins if we're talking "ever."

Would also like to give a nod to James Taylor for his Sweet Baby James album and Jackson Browne for his The Pretender album. The songwriting on those 2 albums are both wonderful, both tell such great stories with a musical flow to them that carries you through from the beginning of side one to when the needle goes up at the end of the second side.

I am serious, now. Seriously.

I don't think that we could really determine this without dividing genres.

But, John Prine has to be in there somewhere.

Dylan - without any doubt

Just bought 18 of his commercial releases this past week as I had only 2 discs in my library prior. (There was a big sale.) Being 50 years old, that is a statement. His voice really was not of interest to me all these years but now, after reading his lyrics for the past year and a half and hearing the ABB and RatDog cover some of his tunes, I just can't get enough. My favorite disc of his is Blonde on Blonde. That is one stunning disc. (2 if you are doing vinyl) Highway 61 ain't too bad either. LOL.

Here's some of my favorite songs (other than most of the hits)

Buckets of Rain - http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/buckets-rain
Emotionally Yours - http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/emotionally-yours
I Believe in You - http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/i-believe-you

All the current songwriters I can think of would probably say Dylan was their biggest influence. Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Rodney Crowell, J D Souther are some of my personal favorites. Willie Nelson was before Dylan, and still writes some great material.

Lennon/McCartney were my 1st thought.

Also glad to see others enjoy Jackson Browne and Mr. John Prine - true treasures!

Yall have gone crazy....it has to be Allman/Betts. What do you listen to the most?
'Whippin' Post' and 'Blue Sky' alone win that bet.
