Have you guys heard of this? Friends get together, break open the wine, then take turns reading passages from their old diaries and love letters.

I am being forced to attend one this weekend. And boy do I have the materialÖ.literally thousands of pages of entries from my late teens to the present. Holy cow, anything written under the age of 30 is just terrible. It will make wonderful material for the gathering, but itís going to take a lot of wine to keep me from cringing during the reading. I tried to practice last night Ė did not go well!

I'll bet the Angels have some interesting entries!

I have NEVER heard of such a gathering!!!! Is this a new thing?
I re-read my diaries from high school and college just last year and TOTALLY cringed through a large part of it.
We were so YOUNG and ignorant and idiotic back then! (a lot of that has, of course, remained as part of who I am) But now I can celebrate a lot of it instead of considering my life to be OVER every day upon awakening! WOW............memories are great some of the time, but i will leave SOME of them in the back drawer to stay there and just know that they made me who I am now. NO re-reading out loud is ever necessary!
(I'd need a LOT of wine...........and i drink a lot now!)

"Cry if you Want" from the Who:

Once it was just innocence
Brash ideas and insolence
But you will never get away
With the things you say today

But you can cry if you want

Don't you get embarrassed when you read the precious things you said
Many, many years ago when life appeared rosy red
No one ever shared your bed
Nothing ever filled your head
Except yourself and little Ted
And scary dreams that you were dead.
Don't you want to hide your face
When going through your teenage books
And read the kind of crap you wrote
About "Ban the Bomb" and city crooks
Think about how long it took
To get over that sudden "Yuk"
When in the mirror you did look
Well now my son you're well in stook

Cry if you want, ooh cry if you want
Cry if you want, ooh cry if you want
Cry if you want, ooh cry if you want
Cry if you want, ooh cry if you want

Didn't you writhe in anger when you saw the man in his big car
Didn't you drive a banger and a gallon didn't get you far
Should have been a famous star
But that ain't what you really are
You could shout your last hurrah
While they are propping up the bar
Maybe things were better then
Before you led a promised life
Rash commitements, heavy raps and left wing spiel all compromised
You fall in love with other's wives
Drive 'em nuts with empty lies
Angry 'cos you lost the prize
Forgot the color of their eyes.

Cry if you want, cry if you want
Cry if you want, cry if you want

Let your tears flow, let your past go
Let your tears flow, let your past go
Let your tears flow, let your past go
Let your tears flow, let your past go

Don't you get embarrassed when you think about the way you were
Yesterday, the day before when you were young with much to learn
Aren't you glad it's your last term
No more acting lowly worm
You can make the suckers squirm
When you tell them how much you earn
Don't you feel ashamed at all the bitterness you feel inside
Does your ego save your face "I had a go - I really tried"
Now you know your leaders lied
Does it stop you acting snide
Or are you still a boy that cried
Tears now surely long since dried.

Cry if you want, cry if you want
Cry if you want, cry if you want
Cry if you want, cry if you want
Cry if you want, cry if you want

LOL - uh oh! I've never heard of this type of gathering, Rhonda, but I'm with Nancy - would require copious amounts of wine to get through something like this!!! I will have to dust my old diary off and empty the love letter box in case this comes up for me ...

("Dec 9 - today I volunteered to stay after school and help old Miss Bessie by cleaning the erasers. Bless her heart - I really enjoy her Home-Ec class and just know that it will be of tremendous aid to me when I become a homemaker myself in a couple of years. I almost missed the bus to get to my candy-striper job! Biff picked me up from the hospital in his dad's Nash and gave me a ride home and kissed me goodnight when he dropped me off. I am so glad that Biff is just a normal boy looking for a normal girl like me and not one of those 'hippie Woodstock' generation kooks that Ive seen around school more and more with their silly piece signs and wearing that chahooley stuff. Some of those kids even smoke dope and jip the pep assemblies!!! I've seen Reefer Madness and I just know some of those kids aren't going to make it. Oh well. Biff and I are making plans to go to the movies Saturday night if we can find an early show that's appropriate. Can't wait!")

Unfortunately this website doesn't provide the heart symbol which would have been used to dot those i's and exclamation points. And ... ummm ... I wholly believe the above to be an accurate recollection of one of my diary entries. Anyway this is my story and I'm sticking to it!

The masterpiece from my younger years was an essay about why i was fighting with James Upton during lunch break in 7th grade.

The "100 words or more" requirement really put my writing skills to the test.

Prolly wouldn't know unless she told us, and then we still wouldn't really know.

Guys do this all the time, but:

1) we do it with beer, not wine (usually)
2) we do it from memory, not diaries or journals
3) everything we say is bullsh*t

Got a stack of 6 x 9 1/2 journal notebooks, and I've chunked just as many. Wish I still had them all, because it was stupid to throw them away. They're fun to look back through every once in a while. The past is a long and twisty road.
