Howdy Butch,

First, Thanks for Layla this year it sounds incredible escpecialy the 3/29 Beacon show WOW! I loved your intros as well.

Anyway you guys do an extended Whipping Post from time to time where it slows down in the 2nd solo (at about the 10 to 11 minute mark these days) and changes up into what I've always called a "Filmore" version. Warren has been tearing it up.

My question is WHO, WHEN & HOW is it decided whether you do that version or keep the tempo fast and do the shorter version? I am curious how often, if at all, this is spontaneous or planned. Doesn't matter, I Love that little jam it makes the song. Not doing that version every time does make it special though.

Thanks for 34 years of great music!

Jimmy

Figured since you 've been around a lot lately I'd bring this to the top for ya so you didn't have to hunt for it!

Think I can field this one.

It's usually spontaneous, provided that the band has the time to play it however they want. I've seen it played way way too many times to count. Sometimes they do it, sometimes they don't, but I've never once heard it discussed.

Curfew frequently plays a deciding factor in this one as well. As Whippin Post tends to be played last and is a longer song, they often find themselves obliged to finish their more long winded shows with a speed version of Whippin Post. The crew used to joke about those encores as going like this: (opening base line-->)Da Da du Da du, Da Da du Da du, Da Da du Da du DA Da. -straight into- bum bum...WAAH! bum bum...WAAH! bum bum...WAAH! bum bum...WAAH!.. bum. "Thank you very much goodnight!"

hmm. hope that last part made sense. it was alway one of my favorite band jokes.

Ok well I made a bit of a booboo there. That last post was not in fact made by Butch, nor is this one. I attempted to sign in as SethT, my profile, but apparently that didn't work, nor does it seem to be working now. So, this is in fact, Butch's son Seth making a fool of himself. laugh it up. I'm going to go over here now...(put's face in corner)

Haha, makes sense to me. I think I heard that version on A.M. radio in the '70s.

Hey Seth, hope your Dad knows you're on here..I know I watch my son on the computer all the time...

Of course he's only 10

But he's already interested in music, Friday night is our music night. We sit down and I teach him a few things on guitar, he doesn't have his own yet, but I'm thinking of getting him one soon.

I also give him some general music history, kind of like the "School of Rock" movie, only with one student

Next week I have to go his school for parent teacher night. Dylan's mother told me his new teacher is an old hippie type lady, apparently into the ABB.

Dylan told her I'm a big fan and have met the ABB.

I don't know if she believes him...guess I'll have to bring in some pictures to prove it

...and maybe a couple of live shows, that might help his grade

LOL, Seth has got to be about 30 by now. The cover of "Reach For the Sky" features young Seth in 1980 ... (Arista 202.843 --- oil painting by his Mother).
