I'm most likely heading to Chicago this weekend; going to see the Derek Trucks Band at the Vic Theater on N Sheffield. Ave in "Mid-Chicago". some advice on the general area near this venue? Rough part of town ? Any hotels nearby ? Restaurants in the vicinity ? Any blues/jazz bars that you recommend that are closeby ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

The Vic is in a great area....Belmont and Sheffield, not 4 blocks from Wrigley Field/my house. Not any really good restaurants nearby except Leona's which is right across the street and is kind of a "jack of all trades" place.....good food though, other than that there's mostly just Chipotle and diners. I think you'll like the Vic...its an old theatre, borderline dumpy, but has pretty good sound and a great size. If you want a great place to eat, cab it to Diversey and Sheffield and hit up Select Cut Steak House....most underrated in the city IMO.

....oh and considering the area and its high 'male' ratio....my guess is most of the hotels that are close to the theatre are gonna be a little sketchy...just a hunch.

My interpretation of high "male" ratio relates to a Seinfeld reference wherby "not that there is nothing wrong with that" ??? Thanks for your help.

Where would you recommend I stay that is logistically & economically friendly ?

There are some dynamite blues clubs down here but most won't open till after the show......I would say go to Buddy Guy's joint down on South Wabash.

Closer to the venue though you can hit up Kingston Mines or Blues...both on Halsted...about a $10 cab ride from the venue.

Seen some great shows there and at the Riviera - cool old dumps with a lot of character. I don't live in Chicago, but get there enough to know my way around and I think you'll like the place.

I will be there - any place to meet up ahead of time there - I've been to the Vic, just don't remember....

When the Mule were there we walked to Kingston Mines - but it was further than we thought....

I know Lee will be there - at least for half of the show.....

I'll be there.

You'd have to cab it, but there's a great showman at Legends Saturday night. The name says it all:

Super Chikan

I don't really know the area (other than by reputation ), but what about this place:

Town Hall Pub
3340 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL
(773) 472-4405

Google maps provides this quote:
""being one of the oldest bars on Halsted, is for breeders. And as the only straight bar in this stretch of increasingly hetero Boystown, it'll only get busier. "

Looks to be about three blocks away.

Perhaps I'm being bigotted here, but I centered Google Maps on Belmont and Halsted, and asked for "straight bars," and that's the closest one that came up.

For those non-Chicagoans reading this thread - the neighborhood around Belmont and Halsted (two blocks from the venue) is the focal point of the GLBT community in Chicago.

Just about four blocks away, I see we have the Goose Island Brew Pub at 3535 N. Clark. hook a little corner, walk 4 blocks South, and you're at the venue. This would probably be my pick, were I picking.

It's a go.

Has a "favorite" emerged for a pre-show?

Sang, you have a PM.

Allright, I'll check it out.

Maybe around 6:00. Is there an opening act, or is it Derek at 7:30?

I'm Audi.

Peace.

Edit: It's great being back in the city - I love the fact that I'm no longer 50 miles from everything.
