I liked the lounges just outside of pier #1 in Brooklyn overlooking the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. I was here at night once making a delivery at pier #1 the next morning. Clean Place.

Try this -

http://www.kayak.com/s/hotels.jsp?completed=true&searchid=_PGeH6qqJKPjS XPk8_ti2A

If that doesn't work, I used www.kayak.com to select hotels in NYC for $300 and under per night for the period you requested. There were a few which showed up (and not dumps). Good Luck and enjoy your trip!

I think there's a weekly flea market(called Greenflea?) somewhere up on Columbus Ave (between 76th/77th) which is handily placed for mooching past the Beacon and paying ones respects!

wish I was going...

and it's on Sunday mornings. Sorry nearly forgot that bit.

rough to find a cheap hotel given the dates. I would suggest trying the Belleclaire on the Upper West Side (near Beacon) and the Club Quarters downtown. the CQ is a popular business travel hotel, so should get decent Fri and Sat night rates I think.

Can find a lot of flea market-type gatherings around city parks on weekends. Specifically Union Square park (off of 14th st.) and Battery Park (Southern tip of Manhattan)

San Gennaro gets very crowded on the weekends but yes it is worth going. Great place for Italian food and dessert. Though it is another street fair.

If you go to www.nyc.gov you will find an area they have reserved for tourist information. They will provide you with a lot of links to a lot of activities and resources.

There isn't anything you cannot find in the city, so it's hard to narrow it down.

Do a search for hotels on the internet services like Expedia. You should find one that is more reasonable than 300 a night. Also check out the Milburn Hotel. It's near the Beacon but not as expensive.

The feast is a MUST--best time to go-Sat. 4:30 or so--By the time you are done eating, drinking eating, talking, eating, walking, it will be about 6 and time to leave while there is space in front of you to walk!!---but you should crawl over to Ferrarars for a canoli
