just saw this on jambands.com and jambase.com

quote:
Widespread Panic Confirms NYE Plans, Short Hiatus

For the first time in their career, the members of Widespread Panic will not celebrate New Year’s Eve in Georgia. Panic has rung in the new year in a number of Georgian cities over the years, finding a home at Atlanta’s Phillips Arena in 1999. As heavily rumored, Widespread Panic will perform at Denver’s Pepsi Center on December 30 and 31 with openers Yonder Mountain String Band. The members of Yonder Mountain String Band spilled the beans while performing in Snowmass, CO this past Monday. Having played both Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks and Denver’s Mile High Stadium this year the group also “gave the middle finger” to doubtful bluegrass purists.

Following New Year’s Eve, Widespread Panic will spend most of 2009 off the road. The group is expected to, however, return for a series of dates at the end of 2009. Widespread Panic was also on hiatus in 2004.

its bad news for the folks in the SE who will miss out on thier NYE tradition, but WSP & YMSB should be a great show in Denver.

i am a little disappointed about the touring break (but understand), I thought that they were really playing well this summer. however that frees up a lot of Jimmy's time for other adventures. i would guess that he will do a solo tour (in support of his new album), probably play with the Dead again, and hopefully make an appearance at both Wannee (this could allow us to hear Frogwings again) and the Beacon.

And maybe if Andy really is leaving Mule that could put Schools in the spot for '09.

It would be great to see Jimmy join the Dead with Warren.

Hear hear! I'd love to see/hear some more ARU shows, especially if Oteil & The Peacemakers remains on break and Kreutzman is off with the Dead next spring.

I wonder how deep the fall-out between Jimmy and Phil runs, and whether that would preclude Jimmy from doing the Dead show(s) even if available. Jimmy did not leave P&F very amicably, and I don't believe has sat in with Phil ever since (even when they were known to be in the same town - such as Atlanta when Jimmy was home off the road).

I wasn't aware of this... what happened? Jimmy seems like too much of a nice guy to run into any serious problems

I'm not sure, but Jimmy left after rehearsals for a tour about 10 days (I think) before the tour was supposed to have kicked off, and long after the tour and lineup had been announced. I don't really follow Dead/Phil matters that closely, but I don't believe Jimmy has played with Phil since then, which seems odd after having played in P&F and the Dead for roughly 5 years. You'd think there would have at least been a sit-in here or there if there wasn't bad blood. I have no idea what the conflict was about, but the very short announcement by Phil at the time cited "other creative opportunities" for Jimmy to pursue. And I don't recall any new projects happening for Jimmy during that time-frame.

I'd rather see Jimmy in Frogwings than The Dead. The real Jimmy is ARU, Project Z, Frogwings, etc... He earned his due by being an incredibly skilled guitarist and learning hundreds of Dead & Panic songs and a handfull of ABB also. I'd love to see him sit in at the Beacon, but have no interest in seeing him w/The Dead, except for maybe a sit in on a song he shined on, like King Solomon's Marbles or Unbroken Chain. It's time for Jimmy to be Jimmy.

I didn't realize that Jimmy and Phil toured with The Dragonflys at the same time, although I knew they both participated in the project. I thought Jimmy only toured with them briefly, due to other commitments, and Rob got another guitarist for most of the live dates. Again, I don't follow Phil/Dead matters all that closely, so I'm not disputing you at all. Just the impression I had.

And I don't think it's Phil that's the problem. I have no insider knowledge or anything, and hate to bash someone's spouse, but I've always heard that it's Phil's wife that causes a lot of the problems with Phil's musicians. Not sure if that's the case with Jimmy or not, but I've heard that's a common theme in Phil's camp.
