I am all in if this going to be the case. It is about time that they unleashed Warren and allow him to get the bus rolling!

Of course the other members will be calling the shots. The last time they toured though, Warren was NOT the front man, Bobby was. This will be the first time that they have really cut Warren loose and let him rip. If this is going down like this, I am all in!!! Yes, the sad part is, it is for Obama.

Bob, Phil, Bill and Mickey to Play Obama Benefit on October 13th
For Immediate Release

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart announced today that they will join together again on October 13th to perform a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, with the city, venue, special guests and other details to be determined pending further discussions with the Obama campaign.

Last February, Weir, Lesh and Hart performed together for the first time since 2004 at the hugely successful “Deadheads for Obama” show at The Warfield in San Francisco. Now founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joins his musical brethren in service of this historic cause.

Stay tuned to dead.net for further details, ticket information, etc.

According to the story, the band will use the show as a test-run for a possible full tour next year.

I wonder how Warren is going to be able to juggle an ABB 40th Anniversary tour, possibly record a CD with the ABB, touring and possibly recording with the Mule, and be able to do a full tour with the Dead? Hopefully, this is just a one-off deal with Warren. If not then Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe need to talk with Warren about were his musical priorities lie.

'Yes, the sad part is, it is for Obama.'

come on why do you guys have to diss the man already. most musicians and fans know the gop was/is a horrendous regime for most of us.
It is not just Obama people will be voting for. It's change. Positive things can happen with new energy, military policy etc.... think Gen Clark as Sec Defense, Al Gore Interior, etc..
so many bright people with social conscience can fill key rolls.

do you think Greg would ask Dickey back in band for the 40th tour ?
or is the rift too deep now ?

So if you put two and two together...........

Warren possibly touring with the dead..........Does this open the door to the remote possibility of Dickey coming back to the band for the 40th?

Hell the Police made it happen. One never knows.

Warren's been in 3 bands at one time before.

I think the possibility of some double bills is great. Mule/Dead ABB/Dead - Sounds like 09 is gonna be a good year.

When Mickey, Phil and Bob played together for Obama earlier this year (Bill couldn't make it)
no one batted an eye. Phil organized it because son is a volunteer for the Obama camp and
slowly sucked in Phil. Phil liked what he saw and put that show together and got the other two
on board.

Now all of the sudden, Warren may LEAD the band (which is BS) and the ABB fans and
Dead fans are up in arms.

It'll be a one off show and whoever does guitar (Mark Karran or Larry Campbell, or both)
it will be fine. Hell back in May Phil just did GD's first few albums in their entirety with
Bob and Mark guesting and it was good.

Now, if Warren does the show also, great too.

I dropped in to read the details of this deal, and even Seen Everything Me was surprised that this could quicly be turned into a Dickey Thread..... Is there some cosmic tie in to Dickey and Obama? Dickey and Mickey? Phil Lesh and Butch? WTF? I am so stupid on these things.....

I would have thought that Butch's comments would have laid all the Dickey talk to rest once and for all. Butch took the time to address the issue on this website, the least any decent fan would do is respect what he said and let this go.

Now, let's refocus back to MUSIC - I am admittedly way late to the Dead party. I wish I had been into them 30 years ago; I missed a lot of great music. But I have boots, many live CDs etc. and have slowly grown in appreciation. But I don't see how Warren's style of playing fits with this band. Jerry's style and his to me, seem very different.

Obviously, my exposure to Warren is limited to ABB and Mule - does he really have the ability to bring what Jerry brought, not in terms of jamming, but tone, mood, etc.?

Greg

IMO, absolutely yes. He is a huge fan of the music and legacy and he has the musical ability to pull it off. I feel he will lead the rest of the guys (Warren does not need to enter a band situation where he is told what to do at this point in his career)

He revitalized the ABB in 1989 and again in 2001 (and continues to do so)

The DEAD need to sign HORNSBY on for keys & (I can only hope) JIMMY HERRING as additional guitars and for me anyway:

HERE COMES SUNSHINE ....................

There's hoping anyway

Relic magazine and jambands.com are confirming a Spring 09 tour.

Seriously keep the politcs over in WP. There are enough threads over there to keep all politcal novices happy for days.

Cool. Warren is is one of the best guitarists ever..... personally I think Mark Karan would be a better fit... only because Warren will make it sound too ABB-ish. My two cents. But I'll go regardless.

Look, I know he's the hardest working man in the music industry and all that, but are you people trying to tell me that Warren Haynes has the power to bring The Dead back to life?

I hope this conversation does not take place. Warren has a band where his priorities lie. That would be the Mule. We should consider ourselves fortunate that he returned to ABB. Warren is a musician's musician. Everyone wants him.

That was not true every night. When they did 5 nights at Red Rocks we went the first 2 because Warren also opened acoustically. The first night it was Bobby leading the show and my friend BigMike took a nap. The 2nd night Warren played the 'Jerry' spot and everything was much better. So, if Warren takes the lead, I'll be there.
The good part is that it is for Obama, lol. Warren was very political in his song selection Sunday at Red Rocks.

i totally agree with both of those statements..i have seen a lot of Warren Haynes shows and , in my opinion , he never sounded better than he did at red rocks...that is not a slight on any of his previous work...he was otherworldly in the mountains

Has Dickey ever done the rehab they asked him to do in the fax? I doubt it, so there is no change in status.
