Well, I am sure it isn't a surprise but I am thrilled about the O'Bama fundraiser and would be thrilled if the Dead came together again for another tour or two. Sure, it's based on selfish things. I never saw the Grateful Dead, I would love to experience the large community get togethers they had, and I think Warren is perfect for the job. He is the voice they are missing and the lead guitar they are missing and if he opens his heart to the situation, perhaps the spirit they are missing. I also think, if all of the the managers stay out of it, he can - because of his easy going personality - broker good will between the various core four members. I would also love to see Jeff Chementi get the role for keys in an extended tour, unless they can get Bruce Hornsby. I think Jeff is an excellent pianist.

I know the hard core ABB fans would freak if the ABB opens for the Dead in a summer 09 tour, but that would be the ticket to some nice turn outs at the sheds. If they stay away from the stadiums and do a few multiple nights, it could still end up to be a great tour for both the fans and the bands. I think they all deserve the money that such a tour would bring in and let's face it, there aren't too many years left for this kind of thing to happen.

Then there is the music. It think it's a great way to get the music out to the next generation and to the people. It is a way to generate excitement for live music throughout the country again. It's a way to get the people out of their safe insular lives on the West Coast and in the middle of the country and re-build the live music business - from the fans and the music on up.

I want to hear the Grateful Dead music with the Dead. A lot of people feel that way. I love the covers too but I am yearning to hear all the music the Grateful Dead did. I've loved everything I've heard from Phil and Friends from early 02 to the present and I love what RatDog brings to the table. I've grown tremendously in my ability to appreciate voices that veer off the path of what is generally considered a soulful ot "good" voice. I've learned that soul comes in a lot of textures and even what I would have considered a thin or odd voice, I now find interesting. I have really grown to enjoy Bob's singing. I am still of the mind that Phil should not sing lead in too many songs but both he and Bob moved me to tears here and there.

The tension musically lays between Bob and Warren's voices and who gets to do the Jerry songs and the blues tunes. I personally think there are enough Jerry tunes and blues tunes to go around so that both Warren and Bob can find the songs that fit each of their voices. It's been a really great thing to see Warren play with RatDog since the June tours. It's been great to see Warren and Bob trusting each other more about the music. I will say one thing though, please rehearse for a tour. Rehearsals are great to help figure out and tweak the music. When it was done in a hurried way or not at all, some of us listeners can hear it.

I have more things to say, of course, but can't spend too much more time tonight on this. I will say though, I have loved the music these past few months - the Mule/RatDog Tour, the Mule Summer Tour and and the RatDog/ABB Tour - It's all been great and I feel blessed to be a part of it.

I was inspired to write because I came across this Bloggers opinion today.

If This Is True - My Grandmother is Doing Summer-Saults in Her Grave!!!

I don't even know what to say. I am at a loss for words. But trust me
after you are done reading this, I will have PLENTY to say trust!

Barack Obama's run for the presidency has launched many different
grassroots campaigns. The most interesting may be the revival of the
Grateful Dead.

I am told that on Oct. 13, possibly either in Philadelphia or
Pittsburgh, the Dead will get back together for at least one show to
raise money for and awareness about Obama.

All four living original members will play together Bob Weir, Mickey
Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. The band's leader, Jerry Garcia,
died in 1995 from a heart attack.

Substituting for Garcia will be Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule master
musician Warren Haynes.

If all goes well, my sources say, the band will then set out on a
major tour in summer 2009.

ARE YOU (deleted) KIDDING ME!!!??? Excuse the censored curse word, but
honestly. My hero, my guiding light, MY GRANDMOTHER [God rest her
soul] was the biggest Grateful Dead fan on the planet. In her youth,
she would travel to all their shows. She was in love with Jerry. For
Christ sake, she had the freaking dancing bear stickers on her car
until the day she died. She kept 2 pictures by her bed - The Pope and
Jerry Garcia. Not to mention her Dead Head wall, which had pictures
of Jerry and all the family members who had passed on. So, needless to
say, it sickens me that the group would even consider thinking about
getting back together WITHOUT JERRY! It just doesn't make sense. HE
was the Grateful Dead. Period. GOD I am fuming. It is funny because
the article says substituting for Garcia like he is out on mental
health issues for the time being. UGH.

I am going to take this opportunity to apologize to my Grandmother,
who is in heaven above, for using the Lord's name in vain - several
times. BUT SHE UNDERSTANDS - TRUST ME!

I know you guys won't like a double biil and maybe even think the ABB going on first would be an insult, but from what I've seen the Dead turnout at Jones Beach in 04 far surpassed any other turnout I have seen there or ever (unless I think of the Stones at Giant Stadium). The Dead 04 was just a big big big crowd with people over flowing with thousands and thousands of people, far more than the ABB can draw on their own and far more than RatDog or Phil can draw on their own, so that is the reason why I am saying this.

I hope this happens!!!!

My oldest son Ken did not care for Ratdog when we saw them.

He's not a Dead Head, but he's heard enough of the Grateful Dead's music and he knows what he likes.

Like me, he doesn't like Bob doing "Jerry songs".

When I told him about this possible 2009 tour, the only thing he said was "will you take me?".

Obviously, I was joking earlier about the beard thing, but in all seriousness...can Warren handle playing guitar for the Dead and The ABB if they play the same bill? How many hours per night are we talking here?

I know the man loves to play and bless him for that, but we are talking about a lot of playing over the course of a tour. Does he have the stamina to do that night after night?

I can't remember the year..maybe some of ya'all can but it was when Phil and Friends were opening for the ABB and Warren and Herring were the guitar players...Anyway, at Deer Creek that year - the line up was:

Warren Haynes Acoustic (opening)
Phil and Friends (Warren)
Allman Brothers ( (obviously w/ Warren)

A lot of people are acting like this is a first time thing. They have toured as the Dead a couple of times since Jerry died and a couple more times as the Other Ones with all of the original members and Warren for at least one of those tours. I would rather just see Phil & Friends along with the ABB next summer, but if the original members of the Dead do it with Warren that would be cool too. Lots of work for Warren on that tour!!! The only downfall would be no summer Mule tour. This year's summer Mule tour was off the hook!!!

Warren has already done double duty with Phil and Friends and the Allman Brothers, so there is no doubt he can do the ABB and the Dead. Warren has a very strong work ethic.

There aren't many people who have the combination of soulful vocals, guitar chops, and familiarity with the materail to even seriously entertain the idea of filling the Jerry slot. Frankly, Warren might be the only person alive who could pull it off. Since Jerry is no longer with us, the alternative is that there is never a proper Dead tour again, and that isn't any fun, now is it?

OK so maybe they worded part of the article wrong, substitution is certainly not appropriate. However, I feel Warren has played enough with all these dudes and has
a great respect for Jerry and all the great music he left to all of us as indicated in Warren's Patchwork Quilt, that it will be something special indeed because he just brings out the best in all that play with him. Is he up for the task bet your ass he will rise to the occassion And wouldn't Jerry want the Dead to live on? I believe so.

Take a look at his schedule for 2004. Warren played the Wave That Flag! tour with the Dead and he was also the opening act for most of the shows (Warren acoustic). Then there was the July 3rd show at The Gorge. He played a 2hr set with ABB and then 2+hrs with the Dead.
Personally, I like the 2003 Summer Getaway Dead much better. Jimmy Herring had a smooth Dead sound and Joan Osborne made the tunes sound the way they should have when Donna was howling around in the 70's. Plus, Steve Winwood opened for them on part of the tour. June 20, 2003 was a great night from that tour, SPAC, NY. Stevie sat in for Mr. Fantasy and Baba Jingo after a fun opening set that concluded with Vodoo Child(Slight Return). Later, in the 2nd set, Mike Gordon rolled out on a Segue for a Bass Duet with Phil.

Anyway, if it happens, I'm in.

As everyone here knows, I'm a huge Deadhead and I would love a reformation of some sorts for another tour. But, I don't really care to mix music with politcs too often...so, thats a bit of a turn off.

With that being said, I can overlook that fact if ends up to be something new & worth while. I am by no means saying that The Dead with Warren isn't worthwhile....but, I would like to see Mr. Haynes concentrate more on Gov't Mule & the ABB. Gov't is still reaching new heights in popularity & exposure. And, everyone is in agreeance That The Brothers really need to release new material soon and focus on the 40th Anniversary. If Warren was to invilved with The Dead for a few months again it would delay the progress within Mule & the Brothers in my opinion.

I would love to have Bruce Hornsby return to the Dead's lineup. He was an integral part of the GD in the past and easily could be again. He's an master on the keys & his vocals are topnotch! I think a lineup including him with Bobby, Phil, Mickey, & Billy, with Jackie or Kimock handling the lead guitar duties. Hell, they could even include Chementi for a lil' extra muscle & depth. I think the musical greatness would be limitless with this lineup. Plus, it would be something fresh and new for the Dead community again.

Yep- That T.O.O. tour from 2002 when Herring was on guitar was sweet - I have 2 set DVD of one show and Herring is very respectful, and he used a very "Dead" aproach to his phrasing. After him, I'd choose Kimmock.

I would love to see Warren with the Dead, but not on a twin bill with the ABB. Just as I enjoyed Ratdog this year, I prefer to have a full set of the ABB - especially for the 40th tour and even more importantly, if they're going to be trotting out guests every show. A two hour ABB show, with guests, is going to leave me unsatisfied.

I don't care if it means they can draw huge crowds - the only person I need to be there to enjoy the show is ME. Let the Dead reform and tour separately, I'll enjoy that too.
