I always enjoy the ABB instrumentals, and I really dig "Instrumental Illness" on the new cd. I was just wondering, when y'all are putting together set lists for a show, if "Kind of Bird" ever pops up? Have Warren and Derek ever rehearsed that together? I know Warren and Dickey wrote it, but I would love to hear a version with the current lineup. I noticed that this song was only played during '91-'92 (from ABB base). Why was it discarded ? Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Not to speak for Butch , but he has said in the past that Kind of Bird is a bit tough to play....it's a great song though and would love to hear it again....but it's not likely...

Dickey used to say it was hard to play, too. Tough song.

Ok, then, how about "High Falls" ? C'mon yall, help me out here. How about bringing back other instrumentals? What about an all instrumental set ??

Wah. Poor Dickey, didn't want to challenge himself. Can't be that hard if Warren could play all the guitar parts by himself in Gov't Mule....shit, the trio versions of it I've heard were better than the ABB versions, save a precious few of early gems.

Let's keep things in perspective for a minute. There's plenty of stuff Warren does with the greatest of ease that most of us can't do at all.

I like most of the instrumentals too, abbfan1 (never big on Pegasus or Rave On, but other than that...). I just don't think the band wants to start playing more songs written by Dickey.

hahahaha...thats true. Yet l....Kind Of Bird would be a wonderful tune to have come back....maybe it could replace every other Liz Reed or something....even with the mixing of the setlists, it still seems like there's an awful lot of Liz Reed's. Not that I don't like the tune...I really dig it, actually...but the ABB have plenty of tunes they could do the 30 minute jam on.

As for the Dickey thing, I think you're right...they play some of them, because they kinda have to. but something that was dominately dickey written, or fully dickey, won't get played.

Truthfully though....outside of Blue Sky, and maybe High Falls, I don't miss the Dickey tunes all that much.

To turn this back to Butch.....LET BUTCH SING!!! LET BUTCH SING!! hehe.

I would love to have that song come back on as well. It would be really cool if they could dig up a few songs like that, that they only play every four of five shows. Really give a kind of "rare" treat, sort of like what they did with "Forty-Four", "Who's Been Talkin'?" & "Good Morning, Little School Girl" this year. There are a few overlooked songs like "Kind of Bird". Anyway, I know the time signature changes are a little different, but I don't think that it would really be that difficult for this lineup. I'm sure they could handle it with little difficulty. The drummers always nailed that song, and something tells me that both Oteil & Derek would bring a life to that song that might be scarier than you could imagine. I'm sure Warren has it down too! I think it's really up to whether or not they WANT to play it. In fact Warren co-wrote it with Dickey, so it's not like they'd be "doing another Dickey song". Once, in a conversation with Warren Haynes & Allen Woody they both told me once that the only reason the ABB dropped it was because Dickey had trouble with it. (I don't mean that as any disrespect to anyone, that's just what they had said.)
