One of my all-time favorite artist is singer/poet/songwriter Bruce Cockburn (pronounced Coburn - w/a long "o"). He's a damn good guitarist, also.

The song that turned me on to Bruce (I had just been busted by C.A.M.P. in California ):

"Great Big Love":

Garcia covered Bruce's "Waiting For A Miracle" (w/a little help from the "Big Man" on sax on this version):

DTB does a cover of this song, which Bruce also covered:

This ones easy for me...without a doubt Steve Kimock. The worlds greatest unknown guitar player.

My second choice is Will Bernard - another phenomenal player who is always overlooked unless you are REALLY HIP.

Steve's right up there in my book, also.
I used to bring him some of my homegrown when we went to see him.
My friends would blame me when Steve seemed to be lost on stage!

edit to add:

Steve does a hellofa version "Little Wing"!

Bruce Hornsby

...One of my favorites . I caught a bunch of flak from by buddies when I bought a copy of " Scenes From The Southside " along with Iron Maiden's " 7th Son Of A 7th Son " at our favorite music shop somewhere around 1987 . No regrets either , Hornsby is an American great .

I've seen Kimock and Bernard live ( both with Robert Walter on B3 , Clavinet , and Rhodes , and Stanton Moore on drums . ) . Pardon me for saying so , but Will Bernard ain't in the same league as Kimock .

Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit might be the most underrated band in the history of music, as far as I can tell. Arguably the greatest live band of the last 20 years, and during their prime they were playing dive bars for 50 people. Speaking of Colonel Bruce, I need to start another thread here in a minute....

The Meters are a little more well-known, but still criminally underrated. They are responsible for so much of modern funk, and New Orleans music in general. They have an incredibly deep catalog of awesome songs, and they are all amazing musicians.

The Greyboy Allstars are probably my favorite non-ABB-related band right now. If you like funk and soul music and you haven't seen the Greyboys live yet, your life is incomplete.

For old bands I'm with Hugh on Bloodrock, one of my old time faves and I still give them a spin once in a while. But these days, believe it or not, I have to go with Gov't Mule. I'm astonished by the number of people I run into who enjoy music that still have not heard of them. If they hit the scene back in the 70's in the days of free form FM radio the would be as big as anyone.

I agree here - always amazed when I mention them to somebody who has no clue, never heard of them.
