I just saw a billboard advertising an upcoming movie - "The Family That Preys" but it doesn't just say that - it says "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys". I have seen this at least twice before, a movies prefaced by 'Tyler Perry's.......'

I have no idea who this person is and have never seen movies announced this way.

He's an actor/writer/director. He has a few successful plays and movies out and has a TV show he developed. Believe all his work is billed as 'Tyler Perry's....'

He's a guy with obvious security and/or image problems, because he puts his name in front of every project he works on.

Tyler as Madea in Madea's Family Reunion. FUNNY movie, while addressing the issue of spousal battery.

Another genius who should learn when not to say anything.

Why shouldn't he have said it, Otie?

Tyler Perry came from "the church."

Sort of like when gospel singers cross over to the mainstream, e.g., the Staples Singers or the Blind Boys of Alabama.

He wrote and produced a very successful series of stage plays, most of which are available on DVD. I've probably seen just about all of them. Several of the movies you've seen, particularly those in the "Madea" series - Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion, and Meet the Browns, were all plays first. Most of the "hardcore" Madea fans will tell you the plays are better - primarily for two reasons: He uses an ensemble cast over and over again (with some change-ups) for the plays, and a lot of the stage actors don't make the big-screen adaptations, so you get a few big and mid-level Hollywood names playing roles that were originally played by people who have been working together for months or years. The second reason is that the movies don't have the music that the plays do. Say what you will about Tyler's self-promotion, his characters can SING. Rent any one of the stage plays, and I promise you'll be treated to some darned-good gospelesque singing, and probably a boat load of laughs, too.

At its core, it's faith-based entertainment. Not to the point of proselytizing, but there will always be a person with a problem, and an individual - likely a secondary character, firmly grounded in Christ that will be available to offer advice and guidance.

There's a bit less of that in the films than in the plays, but even in the plays, it's not over-the-top.

The "church" has known who he is for years, and for a long time were his primary audience. With the Hollywood movies, he's branching out to the world at large.

The "House of Payne" sitcom . . . I think on TBS . . . isn't too bad.

It is rather odd that he puts his name in front of everything, but for the most part, it's very funny entertainment that will always carry a positive message without being too "churchy." All the funniest characters are either rank sinners or "religious" types . . . you know, those possessing the form of righteousness but lacking the holiness thereof.
