Rumours persist that Andy Hess's last gig with Gov't Mule is on Sat. Sept 13, 2008 in Telluride, Co.
Anyone have any idea who will replace him ?
Anyone have any favourites that they would want to replace Andy ?

Speaking with reliable sources, I have been told that he wants to concentrate on "Session work" and that Andy believes that he has achieved" as much as he can" with the band.

I think these rumors are from WSP fans who don't know what to do between shows. Every time I've seen Mule with Andy he seems to be getting better and fitting in better with the group, why would he leave?

I heard it from a VERY GOOD FRIEND of WARREN HAYNES.
Not a WSP fan.

do muscians really have the goal to just do "session work"?

(I am not trying to knock "session work", but it kind of seems like a fall back plan. Unless maybe he doesnt like the road schedule).

If Andy does leave, I hope they don't bring back Greg Rzab. I couldn't get into that guy.

Well at least I will be at Andy's last show with the band if that is the case.

Maybe he will play in Joan Osborne's band that Friday night as well. He did three years ago.

I think it's probably best to just wait and see.....if there is no change then it's just a rumor if there is a change, I'm sure it'll be great either way.

I like Andy Hess ... a lot , yet I'd like to see more of a "heavy" bass player with Mule . I've been listening to Life Before Insanity constantly for the past few weeks . The bottom end on that album SHAKES ! Obviously , every musician has his own style , so this isn't a Woody vs. Hess "who's better" issue . I'd just like to see a more up-front and conspicuos bassist in Mule again .

Is the rumor that Dave Schools is taking over ? I ask that because of all the WSP references in other posts . How could he pull that off with both bands touring so heavily ?

I'd like to throw in a nominee for the job ... George Porter , Jr. .

Sole,
You're quote from the Warren side is a little more definative. Unless you are his agent, I don't think you should be making statements like this.

"Saturday September 13th, 2008 @ Telluride, Co will be Andy Hess's last show with mule.
I've heard this from very reliable sources. I think he did a pretty good job in his tenure."

Porter was the best fit in my opinion. He is also real good friends with the guys but I don't think he wanted the gig.

Yes there are countless musicians that do this. Peoples' music, commercials, jingles, soundtracks, music for intros and chapters on non-music DVDs. All this music comes from somewhere. I used to do some stuff locally and it pays. The bigger the name then the bigger the pay.

Look at Jimmy Page and JPJ from Zeppelin. Both were studio sessions musicians.

Maybe Andy has reasons for a more stable environment. I enjoy his playing but he is not my favorite mule bassist. Too laid back and soft playing for the Mule. I said it after the first show I saw and I said it at the last one. But I am biased to the Woody era.

You're correct (my answer shouldn't have been so definitive)....My sources have always had an inside track on the band...they have always been "Spot on" with their rumours in the past about the band(s) meaning Gov't Mule & ABB.

If this rumor is true , I'd also like to see an unknown bass player get a big break with Mule ala Allen Woody . He may have been known amongst other musicians , but I'd never heard of him before he was chosen by the ABB .

I have heard the rumor since Wanee. Andy has done a great job. If true, we need a bassist that can rattle some windows. George Porter would make a nice addition. It seems Warren can keep you pretty busy.......

It damn sure wouldn't be on lack of ability. Porter's a bad mofo on bass. My guess is other obligations.

By the way, in regard to the rumor of Andy leaving, I'll believe it when I see it.

I like Andy's playing and his stage presence. He has that smile/grin that pops up at the right moments, seems to really enjoy the gig. He'll be missed.

A working session musician's life is infinitely better than a touring band's. I can see why the road would get old after awhile, even though it's not year round with Mule. I know you're all being considerate but yes, if you nominate me, I'll fill in for awhile. I don't play bass very well but I'd do anything for the fans.
