Just surfing wolfgangs vault today and am amazed at all the different groups that played at either Fillmore. I wish we had venues like this today were one night I could see a soul group then some regular straight a head rock n roll, followed by some Dead or in some cases all that in one night. Also have on some Lee Michaels the great organist all it is is him and a drummer and its great. Fillmore stories are welcome here so r posters from back in the day.

My favorite mix up was The Woody Herman Band, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and Led Zeppelin.

Talk about mixing it up! Graham was a genius. Can't find it on the bookshelf right now (Willie P. - you still got this one?) but his biography about his being sent overseas by his parents to save him from the Nazis, his work in the Borscht Belt and then his morphing into being the most imaginative and thoughtful rock and roll promoter ever is fascinating.

Always loved Lee and Frosty (believe he played with a few drummers but Frosty is the one I associate most with him).

You could always count on seeing 3 or maybe 4 different types of artists on any bill at any time.
My favorite/weirdest combo was The Buddy Rich Big Band and Steppenwolf, a mind blowing night of music.

For awhile it seemed that Kooper/Bloomfield were the house band at the Fillmore East, you could almost always catch them any month you went to a show.

But Bill was a master of combining great bands on shows also...saw Fairport Convention, Savoy Brown and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac one night.
All fro $5.50

That was released as an LP called Heavy Organ Live at Fillmore East. I don't think it ever was released on CD though. The record is available on Ebay

........and the Fillmore history continues to be made, in San Francisco. If you're ever out West, plan to check out a show there. They remodeled it 15 or 20 years ago, and it's REALLY nice. Bands are still inspired by the history of the place; it seems everyone just puts on their very best performance. www.thefillmore.com
The Black Crowes are doing five nights in December, I just got two tickets today.
A couple of cool touches: The large bucket of fresh apples as you walk in, you help yourself. This tradition dates back to the sixties. Also: For every sold out show, and most big acts sell out, they hand you a free poster commemorating the performance as you leave.

I caught this one at The Fillmore too and it was amazing how just two guys with drums and a Hammond B3 could totally fill that big old place with music.

"Would you be happy,
Would you be sad
if you lost the best girl
ooooooh
that you ever had.
Wanna know?"

They had a kick ass version of Stormy Monday, as well. First time I heard the tune....was destined to hear it many more times in the near future and then some!

The sad thing is they r ruining the name by making it a chain venue with Fillmore's across the country. Even though I was to young to be there in person to me there will only be 2 Fillmore's one in San Francisco and the other in New York City
