August 1, 1971 was the date of rock's first major benefit concert. It happened at Madison Square Garden, and was intended to benefit the people of Bangla Desh, whom were impoverished due to the recent war of 1970-71.

It featured the likes of George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Badfinger, Jesse Ed Davis, Jim Keltner, Jim Horn & The Hollywood Horns, etc etc etc and special surprise performance by Bob Dylan!

Defintely Dylan's mini set was the best thing, although there were many other stellar performances such as the Harrison/Clapton guitar duet during "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or Leon's medley of "Jumping Jack Flash'' and "Youngblood."

Anyone who was there, or remembered that amazing day, or enjoy listening to the album?

I remember seeing the movie when it came out in the theatre.

I had no idea who Leon Russell or Billy Preston were, but man did they MOVE me!

And that is my favorite Bob Dylan in concert footage.

I still listen to the album on a semi-regular basis.

Love the album. I used to listen to it fairly often. Now, unfortunately, my turntable is packed away.

Love this one and listened to it alot on vinyl back in the day! Recently received the DVD/CD as a gift And if you look what followed later with performers using their star power for the greater good, well, George was the man who got that started. Bless him.

I love it. I feel that it is sometimes a very overlooked event in rock history. Great music.

I wuz there. Pretty much sat in awe of the personalities on stage.
See "Delaney" thread for funny story about getting tickets to the show (overnight wait circling the Garden, acid laced orange juice and slow motion move towards the box office when they opened it at 2AM - unexpected "trip" near the front of the line caused me to get so-so tickets but I wuz there, nonetheless).
The opening notes to Wah Wah still give me goosebumps!!!!!!
37? Man, I'm getting old!
