I'm flying to Chicago for the first time Friday next week. Working for a week and then staying another for a holiday coming back on the 22nd August. I'm staying at W Randolf St and N Wells St.

I was wondering what there is to do in the windy city. Any bars or venues I should check out? Groovy tourist things? Local bands playing? A good cheap Mexican restaurants? A cool record or musical instrument shop?

I was thinking about doing an open mic somewhere too but will need to see if I can borrow/rent an acoustic guitar. Hey maybe I'll even pick up a cheap one in a pawn shop (or is Chicago too uptown for that?).

You should be in town for the annual air and water show. Should be amazing this year as it is the 50th anniversary. Gary Sinese and Bill Murray will be on hand for the fun. I hear Bills gonna parachte out of a plane. May want to go to Metromix.com and look up bars, clubs, etc. Some fine mexican restaurants in the city and one amazing Peruvian place......

You should do what most Illinoians do and drive to Wisconsin.

Chicago is a great place!

There are some great museums in Chicago. I love the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium are nice, too. The Art Institute has a very nice permanent collection and always has good temp shows, too. There used to be a Hologram Museum that had some amazing stuff, too - not sure if it's still in operation (if I recall it was near Harpo studios).

You know, Buddy Guy has a bar there...

And of course, Taste of Peru - written up in local Chicago mag for the best paella in the city!

Great town and easy to get around on the El.

The Jazz fest starts Aug 29 - wonderful time.

A band called Jack Straw is appearing at the Park West on August 9th. THe Park West is a great venue. Jack Straw is a Grateful Dead cover band. They'll be celebrating Jerry Garicia's birthday (Jerry was actually born on Aug 1.) The Air & Water show is pretty cool.

Send me a personal message and I will be glad to help you out with whatever you need.

You'll be a nice walk from the Jazz Record Mart, now located at 27 E. Illinois.

http://www.jazzrecordmart.com/index.htm

The Taste of Chicago is long over. You'll just miss Lollapalooza, which is this weekend - probably a good thing unless you were actually attending Lollapalooza. I don't plan on being anywhere near Grant Park this weekend.

If you want to get a little taste of the different cultures that make up the city, stop by "Under the Picasso" weekdays at noon. Here's the August schedule:

http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalContentItemAction.do?BV_ SessionID=@@@@1294155629.1217452297@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadeekhefkffcefe celldffhdfhm.0&contentOID=536995575&contenTypeName=COC_EDITORIAL&am p;topChannelName=SubAgency&blockName=Under+The+Picasso%2FMonthly+Schedu les%2FI+Want+To&context=dept&channelId=0&programId=0&entity Name=Under+The+Picasso&deptMainCategoryOID=-536898681

Here's the page for Buddy Guy's Legends - it features an easy to navigate schedule right on the home page:

http://buddyguys.com/

Also, at Grant Park - in the large field kitty-corner to the Petrillo music shell, there's an outdoor film festival on Tuesday nights (free). Here's the schedule to that if you're into "classic" type films:

http://chicago.metromix.com/events/fair_festival/chicago-outdoor-film-festi val/352402/content

I don't know where you're from, but good pizza is easy to get all over the place here.
Someone else mentioned Uno's. They're good, yeah, but Lou Malnati's is probably my personal favorite. I can also vouch for Giordano's, Gino's East and Connie's. Any of those'll do ya. For the best corned beef with little argument, go here: http://www.mannysdeli.com/

The Air and Water show will be PACKED, especially if the skies are clear. I wouldn't try ANY form of transportation, truth be told, not if you're already at Wells and Randolph. If you want to go, just grab a blanket or lawn chair and walk East until you can't go any farther. That ought to get you a good spot.

I don't really frequent the "meat market" bar scene, but if you're into that, the area right around Division and Rush street is a hot spot.

The 9th or 10th would be a good days to catch our own Lefty Collins and the No Mercy Band, playing the downstairs club at the House of Blues, just another short walk from where you'll be staying.

Well, there are a few things. I tried to keep my list limited to the down town area.

Have a great time while you're here.

Peace.

If I were going to visit Chicago, a Cubs game at Wrigley Field would be on the top of my list. But I would only throw a Cubs home run ball back on the field.

Cubs blow, it's a fact. I think Carl Sagan wrote a book that proves it. I never got it, I wouldn't date a girl that wasn't any good for 50 years, why would anyone root for a team that isn't any good? But then Illinioians are an odd bunch and do strange things, like rooting for the Bears.

Aurelio's or Brick's Pizza.

Pizzeria Uno and Due are tourist traps.

If you like fancy steak places, Gibson's is pretty good and there's usually one or two famous people there.

If you want to spend some time indoors, check out the Art Institute of Chicago at Michigan and Adams.

It has been years since I lived there, but I used to regularly hit the blues clubs in Lincoln Park at the intersection of Lincoln/Fullerton/Halsted. The Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S. are still there. Short cab ride from where you'll be staying.

I've often run into some great live music around Buckingham Fountain for free, also. And agree on seeing a game at Wrigley Field - this is my favorite place to watch baseball. And the cubs rock!
