The Rolling Stones Land At Universal
Friday, Jul 25, 2008 10:47AM

The halls at EMI won't be rocking as much as they used to, as the label's premier band says goodbye to the record company and inks a deal with Universal Music Group.
The Rolling Stones is the latest big-name band to leave EMI. Radiohead exited the label last fall shortly before launching a revolutionary pick-your-price promotion for its latest album, In Rainbows.
The Stones signing with Universal is also a disappointment for Live Nation, which had been trying to sign the band, reports Reuters.
EMI has been going through a transition since it was acquired by private equity company Terra Firma in 2007. Terrra Firma's top gun, Guy Hands, had personally appealed to the Stones to stay with the label.
But the personal touch evidently wasn't enough. With Universal, the band will have full control of its catalog going back to the 1970s, according to The Times Of London.
Under the new agreement, Universal will release new albums by the band through its Polydor label and will control all digital and physical rights.
"Universal are forward-thinking, creative and hands-on music people," the Stones said in a statement. "We really look forward to working with them."

It is very interesting to see how the business of music is changing right in front of our eyes.

I was a huge RS fan... and I totally understand your feeling about Mick Taylor...

My confusion with the Stones began around the time Mick and Keith started wearing ..eyeliner , mascara, looked to be even lipstick at times >> Very Strange<< I know there is stage makeup but that was just to much for me...

This is how it began for me:

1. Aftermath..
2. Between The Buttons
3. Beggars Banquet
4. Let It Bleed
5. Get your ya's ya's out
6. STICKY FINGERS
7. Hot Rocks
8. Exile On Main Street.

and then somewhere after "that" they lost me.. I still really love hearing them and brings me back to a time in life ... I Loved ....

Stones can kick some butt thou.. Mick Jagger is and always will be front man and a show man and Keith Richards is a great guitar player... Mick Taylor has been missed , but now they have Chuck Leavell.

Saw them in 1970 at MSG... I will never forget that whole BLDG was literally rocking and swaying.... Sympathy for Devil ..over the top... WOW

Just another realisation that the "major labels" still do not have a clue. What a huge gaff for Mick & Keith to sign yet another ridiculously expensive recording/distribution deal with yet another sucker.

This will never pay off for UMG (not even close). If UMG think that having the catalog on I-tunes is worth millions to UMG - shows that the top folks there still think it is the 1980's or 1990's.

What a laugh - the band will put out some rushed piece of mediocre material to support a European tour next year and collect a huge pile of $$$$

What a farce for UMG - Great for Keith Mick & Charlie (another sucker is born every minute apparently)

Happy 65th birthday to Mick Jagger today. A very impressive career to date, no matter one's opinion of the Stones' music, which I happen to like. A fine job of evolving and staying relevant over the decades.
