Man, am I out of touch with Top 40 music! I look at what's on the top of Billboard's charts and I scratch me head and say to myself "who are these artists?" (see below)

I stopped listening to top 40 music when Hall & Oates were at the top of the charts, circ. 1984. It was when Madonna hit the big time that I decided to turn my back on Top 40 music and retreat to the classic rockers such as our Brothers, Beatles, Dead, Jimi, Who, Doors, Clapton, Tull, etc. That's what I've been listening to till this very day.

Consequently I ignored what was actually popular on the radio with my generation and younger. I can't even name a single Mariah Carey song or Beyonce songs or whoever. I'm totally out of touch with today's music. Then I look at what's at the top of the charts this week...

Below is a list of the recent top ten from the America's Top 40" website:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --
1 1 Rihanna
Take A Bow
2 3 Jesse McCartney
Leavin'
3 4 Katy Perry
I Kissed A Girl
4 2 Leona Lewis
Bleeding Love
5 5 Natasha Bedingfield
Pocketful Of Sunshine
6 8 Danity Kane
Damaged
7 10 Chris Brown
Forever
8 6 Ray J
Sexy Can I
9 7 Lil Wayne
Lollipop
10 - Metro Station
Shake It
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------

Anyone know these artists? Who the hell is that McCartney? I don't think he's related to Paul?

So the question is: are you as out of touch with today's music as me??????????

I think it was Col. Bruce who said; "the best thing about popular music is that it usually isn't popular for very long"

Or what Clapton said towards the end of his book; "music today is much like it was when I was younger - 95% rubbish, 5% pure"

However you say it, most of this stuff isn't worth the time you'd spend listening to it. But hey, there's an ass for every seat

All I gotta say is congratulations! I was driving my son to karate tonight and we heard one of these songs (Leona) the only way I knew is because my car stereo has RDS and it tells the artist and title (and Leona is my street) My son said "turn it dad, I don't like this" I put in a CD after that.

Have to ditto this. Very rarely listen to radio unless it's a local indie station that plays absolutely no Top 40 music.

I'm mostly into alternative and classic rock, so I'm very out of touch with today's Top 40 music.

Never heard of 'em ... but then .. they never heard of me
neither.
Trying to think of the last Top 10 music I actually bought.
Maybe it was Santana "Supernatural" album ... I think a song
or two off that probably charted pretty high.
And I liked Norah Jones "Don't Know Why"

i don't pay much attention to top 40 stuff either...but i am aware of some of it simply because i have kids. i can tell you that the song "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry is about a girl kissing a girl & liking it! here are the words...

This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost my discretion
It's not what, I'm used to
Just wanna try you on
I'm curious for you
Caught my attention

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

No, I don't even know your name
It doesn't matter
You're my experimental game
Just human nature
It's not what, good girls do
Not how they should behave
My head gets so confused
Hard to obey

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin, red lips, so kissable
Hard to resist so touchable
Too good to deny it
Ain't no big deal, it's innocent

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

nice stuff for kids to be walking around singing eh?!

There's a top ten? I thought they stopped that when good music stopped being produced.

I'm in my early 40s, I lost interest in the Top 40 when I was about 14 and lost touch with popular music completely about 20 years ago.

A little over 18 months ago I began a relationship with a lady who pretty much only listens to commercial radio and the odd popular cd so I've had to requaint myself with popular music and I have to say I've been surprised; I didn't realise just how unspeakably horrific it is. Sorry, I warn you now, this may turn into a rant!

What's even worse than popular music though [ccould anything be?], is the presentation of popular music on commercial radio here in the UK (I can't speak for the US), banal wittering that is so mindless and irrelevant to anything thought provoking, that it makes you long for relief in the form of the next three minute burst of aural excrement.

I'm going to stop now because I could rant on for hours on this subject.

Pure, unadulterated, relentless rubbish!

That's a different debate entirely, there's plenty of good music being produced and not just by old bands either.

Yes, Barry, I'm sure out of touch with those artists.

I hear about some "popular" music since I teach sixth-grade, but I don't listen to it.

I have a car stereo that's directly hooked up to my iPod, and I "shuffle play" the songs that I put on it for every car ride, long or short.

Totally out of touch. That market is not designed for me so we are both better off not knowing each other.

A good friend of mine (who would fit in just fine here) likes to say "So much music . So little time."

Amen.

Our time here is finite so any time I have for music has to be devoted to "the good stuff".

Totally completely out of touch, couldn't tell you who any in the Top 10 are. Now if it was the Top 10 Blues or Bluegrass artists, I would know who most of them are.

Waaaaaaay otta touch ! And...like many others...damned proud of it. If it's not the Grateful Dead channel, Outlaw Country, The Roadhouse, The Vault or Jam On on Sirius I don't hear it unless it's in my ITunes.
