Just wanted to ask about free concerts, it seems that here in Detroit we are very lucky enough to have tons of them every summer. I know that some of the bands are a joke, but the Detroit Riverfront stage is an awesome venue, check it out on youtube.

Do other cities have as many free shows like these? These are from the past two years only, and there are actually many more that I cant remember cuz I didnt go.

Detroit Jazzfest:
2008-
DEREK TRUCKS BAND
Col Bruce Quark Alliance
Bonerama

2007-
Larry McCray....
Medeski, Martin, Scofield & Wood
Herbie Hancock

Detroit Riverdays:
2008-
Dave Mason
The Verve Pipe (the freshman, yes)

2007-
DICKEY & GREAT SOUTHERN
Kenny Wayne Shephard
Joan Jett

94.7 WCSX Concert Series:
2008-
Pat Benetar
Mark Farner/Mitch Ryder
Starship w/Mickey Thomas
Rick Derringer
The Guess Who
Blue Oyster Cult
Kansas
Foreinger

2007-
Grand Funk Railroad
Asia
Eric Burdon & Animals
38 Special

Are we lucky, or does this happen everywhere? This is excluding the Chrysler Arts, Beats, & Eats Festival, which always has great bands, and tons of local talent.

This one isnt free, but I just noticed a JOHNNY WINTER W/LARRY MCCRAY & CARL WEATHERSBY show set for Sept 12....Oh god

I LOVE Larry!

That's a good list of freebies for sure!

We had Sonny Landreth a couple of weeks ago and I'm going to see Leon Russell for free on 8/7.

Yeah, there's always a string of free shows in my area (Hampton Roads, VA) every year. A lot of shows are a joke, but there's always a handful of good ones. I love when good bands play for free! This year, I'm seeing Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby, and Old Crow Medicine Show for free!!

So far this year Cincy has had a lot of free country shows. I have not gone to those. The Charlie Daniels Band, 38 Special, and Shooter Jennings played a cool show on 7/4. Saw Dave Mason a week later. That was a GREAT show. Kenny Loggins, Eddie Money, and War will be here next month. Also a freebie with Extreme, and Kings X coming in Sept.. I went and saw Derek, and Susan SSR the night Grand Funk Railroad [no Mark Farner] and Credence Clearwater Revisited [no John Fogerty]played a freebie. The county fair scene always has the hasbeens like REO, and Skynyrd which they charge an extra fee for. If you drive about 25 miles to Indiana, there are alot of free shows over by the casino's.

These guys were really good a few yrs. ago. The keyboard player was from Sugarloaf. Jerry? Sang "Green Eyed Lady". The guitarist played in Iron Butterfly, and Blues Image. He later played, and co-wrote many of Alice Coopers hits. He sang "Ride Captain Ride" and "Inna Gadda Da Vida". The bass player was from the band that played "Land Of 1000 Dances" which they played. The drummer/singer was the real deal in that band. He was in Rare Earth for many yrs, and sang most of their hits."I Just Want To Celebrate" and "Hey Big Brother". I would pay to see these guys again. They were alot of fun to watch. I just found this link. It is the same lineup!!

Hey Allen, don't you think they should bring Dickey and his band for the free shows at the boardwalk? That would be awesome!
