He plays slide on songs like Statesboro and One Way Out and he's playing some slide on many of the new song. What do you guys think of his slide playing?

i love DBGS but I don't think Andy is a slide player. It is similar to Dan and Dickey where I think Andy's playing has more in common with Dickey than Duane. Andy is a good player but at times it has that cover band feeling to me. Definitely he is no Warren, Derek, Jack or Duane.

Andy is the real deal. I have an instructional dvd of Andy sharing his talents on playing the blues that's great.

His dvds are very friendly for leearning, I have some friends at work that have bought every one of them. They put Andy up on a pedestal.

I actually got a chance to compliment Andy on his slide playing after a show last summer. He was very appreciative of it, and a really nice guy too. Overall he's a great player IMO.

Not a question of being spoiled, Duane and Derek have set the standard very high. I don't think this means we have to praise everyone in the Allman family of bands that puts a slide bar on their finger. Playing slide is an art form, some can do it, some can not.

My .02? Andy is very average and his slide playing lowers the quality of what a legend like Dickey is offering. Hell, Dickey's a better slide player, you'd think Dickey would want the players around him to be better than he is.... No wait, that was Duane's thinking.

I really love Andy's playing... I am not a musician just a lover of music and what sounds good to me.. and I dig Andy.... I've seen Andy with Dickey Betts and Great Southern and I've seen him locally on L.I. with The Groove Kings.... Fantastic slide, He sure feels what he is playing.. If you haven't seen him with DB or with Groove Kings... make a point to go see and hear this man... A wonderful addition to DB&GS. .
Andy occasionally stops by on the DB website and I'm sure he stops over here as well..

Hey Andy .... Looking forward to Westbury...

I have only seen Andy play live once and I loved it.... He has a great slide tone...

And his instructional videos are the best....

Andy is an exceptional player and I love his playing, I was just wondering what people think of his slide since that seems to be a controversial subject. I think Warren summed up Andy the best:

"Taste, tone, chops--Andy's got it all!" ~ Warren Haynes

He has Warren's endorsement. That says enough, right there.

I like Andy. But on the stuff I have heard he is not that high in the mix or maybe the recording isnít capturing his part. This is on two versions of Statesboro on youtube. On one Andy has amp problems and Dickey takes over and the other the slide is not a dominant voice as it was with Duane and even Jack. So Andy may have a very different slide role in the 3 guitar arrangement. I am trying to see this version of the band and maybe Andy is more audible live.

I don't measure one guitar player to the next one. I won't compare Andy to someone else. He has his own style, and does an amayzing job at playing guitar. I don't want to hear Andy (or anyone) covering Duane's part in Statesboro Blues, I want them to play like themself.

Andy does a great job playing in DB+GS. He really inspires Dickey to play, more than anyone else in GS has. His slide playing is terrific.

I am lucky enough to live in the same part of NY Andy does, so I get to hear him front his own band as well. You don't know what a player can do, until you hear him play his own stuff. GS is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Andy's talents go. NY/LI folks should check out Andy's band, The Groove Kings, or get the CD from his website. You will be glad you did.

Mitch

I'm not a musician or a music expert by any stretch of the imagination but I know what I like when I hear it. I've seen Andy 3 times now with GS and walked away each time very impressed. He is fantastic.

We are indeed spoiled by Duane, Derek, Warren, Jack, Dickey (in the day). But to say Andy A. is "average" is a really arrogant and stupid statement. He's a hell of a player.

That is what I felt an is essentially what I meant by he sounds like a cover band. Some people can play anyones' music and sound like it flows through them. Others seem to be playing the part. That is how I feel about Andy's playing with Dickey. He doesn't soar off like the others have. Don't like to compare but that is a little difficult after seeing the band so many times and seeing Dickey's previous partners.

I bet Andy soars more on the Groove Kings stuff.

The best thing Andy did was fill out the guitar lineup. No way that Duane Betts pulls off being the only other player. That was a weak version at best. Andy fixed that so he gets bonus points.

I really like GS so I will gladly accept Andy. Just doesn't do it for me like Warren, Jack or Derek which very few would so there is no shame there.
