Ok, I'm new here so this has probably been discussed before but at the risk of boring you all.......What slide tuning is used by Derek and Warren on "Old Friend"? I saw on another thread that Derek uses open E a lot, but to my hearing this is different. Open G maybe?
Or a hybrid tuning? Hope you can help, I figure there must be a lot of slide guitarists on this forum!

Regards,
Paul Andrews

I don't know of Derek playing in anything but Open E. I mean, I'm sure he could, but I've never heard him say he did anything different on this song. As confusedcrowe says, Warren normally plays slide in standard tuning.

derek would be in open E but you can play the song very easily in standard.

There's no way either of them are in standard tuning. I'll get the guitar out and give it a listen. I believe Warren is in open G, but that's just a guess.

Unfortuntely you guessed wrong. Derek is in "E" and Warren is in standard.

I have found it hard to play in the key of E whilst in "G" tuning. The key of "D" would be much easier.

Wow. On second listen, I can see how Warren could be in standard, but I never would have guessed it. That's Warren for you. It doesn't suprise me, given that he paraphrases Duane's slide licks in standard. And yeah, it would be hard to play in E in G tuning! Guess I should have listened to the song before I started running my head!

Ok, I know this is an old topic, but I was just listening to "Old Friend", and felt I had to dig it up and point some fingers. On a whim, I decided to get out the old geetar, and check something, because the standard tuning thing didn't sound right. Sure enough, the tune is actually in the key of D, not E, and Warren seems to be in Drop-D tuning, given that there is a tell-tale low D note in there. And as for Derek, he would have to be in Open D tuning. I should have checked this a long time ago. Hope this clears things up.

I wouldn't be surprised if Derek stayed in Open E... playing unusual keys doesn't seem to bother him...

Well, open D is the same as open E, only a whole step down. So its basically the same. In this case, it is most definitly D, or even lower and capoed. Derek is unbelievable, but playing what he did in E ain't possible. This song kind of reminds me of "Mean Old World" by Eric and Duane.
