I will get blasted here but I have seen Jimmy play live several times with different bands. I have now seen him about 4 times with panic on the internet. On streaming video you can see his fantastic work up close.

My point is there a better lead guitar player in America? I was totally blown away by him again last night. His lead licks are always right on. He soars to limits I could only dream of.

He is truely (except our world) a unknown player also. I look back at the times I saw him play with the all the bands in Suwannee at Spring and Mag and think back why was I not clued in on him?

I must have been just caught up in all the exitement of live music. I must see Panic live now!!!

I'd say that Jimmy and Derek are the two best players in the rock world right now. Jimmy finally found a perfect situation for him with WP. His playing makes them a much better band.

To see them on stage last night was awesome. Jimmy used to sit in with DTB at Magfest and they would blow me away from 10 feet.

Also when they played together in Frogwings. Nothing like now though.

I'm always amazed by great players and left wondering where does it come from. Something inside is unleashed and the music just flows naturally. What little I can play I'm not even sure where it comes from.

Guys like Duane, Derek, Jimmy, Jack, Warren, Brent, Lefty, SRV seem to never fail at hitting the note. I'm left befuddled.

I can't seem to translate what's in my heart and head to the guitar.

Yeah, definitely check out some summer 2000 ABB shows. I'd also suggest hunting down some ARU and Frogwings shows too. And some late 90's dTb from when Jimmy was touring with them. If you like the Grateful Dead, check out Jazz Is Dead too. As much as Jimmy adds to WSP, I think some of his earlier bands provided better vehicles for him. I can't wait to hear his first solo record, which is due out in October. Oteil, Kofi, Jeff "Apt. Q258" Sipe, Matt Slocum (Peacemakers) and Derek are all on it. I agree though, he's one of the best players out there.

Surely the most unknown and underrated guitar player around. I'm not so sure about the best, but he is amazing. I watched the stream last night and Jimmy tore it up big time. I also have witnessed Jimmy playing live many times with Phil & Friends as well as the ABB. I think I have been lured to Widespread Panic after last nights show. I'm not familiar with any of their songs but I was grooving to that entire show. I don't know how this band has slipped by me through the years. They really freakin' jam.

I have seen him several times. I have also heard much of the 2000 ABB. I have also seen Panic 2 times without him.

WP just seems to be the right style band for Jimmy. Iclips also gives you a very close look at his playing you do not get when you are live. Man he is fast and the feel he has for what note and when to be there is right on.

Him and the Colonel used to rip it up to!

Jimmy is not only one of the most talented musicians on the planet, he is also a very humble and unassuming
person. A really sweet cat, that I've had the honor to meet and greet at several shows.
Really nice even to dudes drooling over his PRS guitars!

When you get to the level of playing that cats like Dickey Betts, Jimmy, Warren and Derek get
it's not about who is the "best". It comes down to whose style you dig.

I dig Jimmy the most.

Well said. As Dickey once said when asked about Derek vs. Duane (I believe at the RnR HOF), guitarists don't keep score.

Jimmy is definitely one of my favorites. He takes a very different approach than Warren and Derek who are my other favorites.

what do mean by different approach?

derek actually learned quite a bit from jimmy herring. they are good buddies. you can hear jimmy's influence in derek's note choices when he moves beyond the traditional bag of slide licks.

That's true for Derek. I guess I was referring to Derek as being a slide player. But Warren I think comes from a different place, more blues. Of course I don't know what the hell I'm talking about here anyway. They are all great and I definitely think Jimmy is a tremendous fit with WSP and hope he will remain with them for years to come.

I agree!

I think that Jimmy is easily the most technically talented guitarist that I've ever seen, that doesn't come off as an egotistical mathematician without soul. He is a perfect mix of Steve Vai and B.B. King, if that makes any sense

An icredible guitarist and a genuinely NICE-Guy! My daughter called last night as they were leaving AllGood and said that she had got to meet JImmy breifly Sat nite as she managed to get backstage just before WSP went on. She said he was really friendly and and seemed to enjoy talking music with fans! Having seen WSP with Michael Houser and several times since, IMHO, Jimmy is the missing piece that completes the post-Houser WSP and will help them move forward in much the same way that Chuck Leavell helped the Brothers. He's a great musician who says little unless asked, and let's his playing speak volumes. He did a great job with the Brothers for the summer tour after Dickey was let go, and to his credit would not take the job permantly. I really enjoyed the Iclips live-stream of their set Sat night. He and Derek looked right at home playing side-by-side! He definitely deserves more recongnition by the media and mainstream music coverage!

The recent WP show that I saw was amazing and mostly due to Jimmy. (With all due respect to the other members), He was just so hot.

Jimmy is the "shredder" of the jam band scene. Speed is what seperates him from the others and I think that is also one major influence on Derek.

I agree with others that WP seems to be a perfect vehicule for him. He is always great but WP seems to bring out "his" style more.

One of the greatest in my book. Stood right in front of him at a couple ARU shows last year. Totally blown away at his performance. We are proud of our great North Carolina guitarists, Jimmy and Warren.

i agree that panic is a great fit for jimmy. i saw wsp a few times with mikey, a couple of times with g mac, and now a couple of times with jimmy. they are great with jimmy and he seems to have added new life to the band. i felt that with g mac sometimes they were just playing and not really going out. (i know they were going through some difficult times and can't blame it all on g mac). with jimmy they are really going out, playing / exploring old and new songs. i saw jimmy with project z, aru (reunion), phil, abb and wsp. I think he's at his best with panic (i wish i could've seen frogwings or early aru). Cant wait for the solo disc and possible tour.
