It just sort of popped into my mind tonight.

We got the news of Greggs Hep C, (and I am praying for a FULL recovery), no Beacon in March, abbreviated touring schedule this summer, the 40 year anniversary mark coming up.

I Really REALLY hope not, but if the end is near....its been one fantastic, exhilerating, sometimes surprising, but allways thrilling long long ride.

And thank goodness for all of the recordings. The official Label releases, the boots, and all of these Instant Lives and Munck Mixes. You know its almost like parents who "set up" their kids with a storehouse of wealth for when that day comes that they are gone.

I dont think the legacy of the ABB will ever diminish. They started off as being a completely revolutionary rock and roll fusion band, and they are ending...whenever that might be...at the same level of spirit and fire.

Not possible, the road goes on forever!

At this point I look at every show as a gift. Nothing lasts forever

Nothing but optimism coming from this corner. 40 years just around the bend, and still THE GREATEST BAND ON EARTH. With Gregg on the mend, I don't see why they can't hit 50.

People have been speculating about the end of the ABB since 1970.
Remember, the road goes on forever even if the touring won't.
Thanks to Kim for writing those words which, even though he didn't know it at the time, have become the anthem for the eternal Allman Brothers Band.

I said the same thing in 97 when Warren and Woody left and the same thing in 00 when Dickey was kicked out......... I was dead wrong both times. I won't make any more bold predictions.

I think that the 40th will be end of the road for Allman Brothers Band. Derek and Warren will keep the spirit going with their bands, dTb and Govt Mule. Oteil and Marc will definely be "key player" in whatever musical endeavors they find themselves in. Gregg and Jaimoe will have low-keyed, but still active musical lives through Gregg Allman and Friends and Jaimoe's Jass Band. And Butch, he will be living a comfortable life as ex-patriated American living in France, and no doubt he'll find him some musical outlets in that part of world. Forty years is good long ride for any band, and the Allman Brothers Band has been good about keeping their musical performance standards up through all these years, but now because of the age of their orginal members, health issues, price of gas and the cost of touring in general, and the general decline in people who go out to concerts, and the state of the recording industry in general, it's time for a well deserved retirement. One thing to remember, if they retire at the 40 year mark, the band will be going out still at the "top of their game". That might not be happening at the 45 or 50 year mark.

i think its close to the end. people seem to think a band needs to go on forever until everyone in the band is dead. maybe the original members are tired and want to live the rest of their lives with their families. everyone is allowed to retire and i think after next year they basically will

Actually, the road does not go on forever...for any of us.

I hope they continue on as long as they want to........

What more can one ask for. Every show is a special one.

at 50 years, Gregg will be close to 72...it's a nice thought though.

I'm sure seeing them retire from the road is something that none of us want to see.

Nothing wrong with optimism.............

I'm a mess at 52, I hate to see myself at 62...if I make it that long.

I guess I look at this different.... my little 48 week treatment for Hep C in 2002 was supposed to whup the dragon and then proceed with life. It turned into a multi year two treatment run, with an attempted one inbetween. I am here now, past two years post TX and just now am getting strong optimism from my doctor on likely whupping the dragon.

Greggs prognosis and future road may dictate the bands road in the next couple of years. Hopefully his experience will be simple, go on with life, and untangledd from now on with medical battles. I think to speculate now on the bands future is not giving credit to the size, power, and determination of the dragon he is ridding from his body.

Having said that, hell yes the road goes on. Just how many curves and straightaways none of us know for sure......

I would hope before it ends that the 4 originals plus Chuck, Derek and Warren will find an old warehouse and play for themselves one last time.

I kinda see it comin'. Age, expenses, wear and tear; they all take their toll. Gonna be a sad day for me though, been following them since '69.

The music however will go on forever. Thank God for the music we still have!

Whether they're touring or not the Allman Brothers Band will still be the best damn band I've ever heard. All I'll be able to say when it's over is: THANKS FOR THE RIDE!

Enjoyed every minute of it.

My own thoughts are that the band is probably nearing and end. I don't know what the lasting effects of Hepatitis C or its treatment will be on Gregg. I know he was supposed to get a divorce and who knows what impact that will have. I could see some people wanting to tour more and some wanting to step back. Its not my business how Gregg should handle it so I am thankful for any chance to see him. Jaimoe and Butch Trucks are kind of the wild card. Jaimoe has had a back problems in the past and I could easily see that holding him back. Butch's right arm is due to fall off any day due to all the hard work he puts in.

I guess what I'm saying is that touring does take a toll on your body and that it would be unrealistic to expect 10 or more years out of the band. Assuming they have their finances in order, I suppose they could call it quits at any time. If they're healthy, I think we can expect 2-3 more years and then that will be enough for them. Then I will start following Lefty Collins around the country.

Even if the band ceases touring, I could still see them getting together to do a couple of weeks in NYC on a yearly basis for some time.

I dont think its the end but I dont think we will be seeing the full touring schedule that they used to bring out in the summer. The Beacon will go on for yrs. in my opinion and the summer schedule will probably be paired down some.

Hey its a gift that they are 40 yrs later. Lets take it all in and enjoy it while we got it instead of worrying when it ends.

All I know is I have 2 shows qued up for August and I cant wait!!!!
