NEW YORK (Billboard) - Building a studio behind the Jacksonville, Florida, home he shares with wife, soul/blues singer Susan Tedeschi, and their two children has allowed guitarist Derek Trucks to make "the first album I've ever been a part of that feels epic."

"Usually with a major label we were under the gun; we had 10 days to get in, cut everything, finish it ... and you hear things that you always feel like you would completely rerecord if I had the chance," the Allman Brothers Band guitarist and Eric Clapton sideman told Billboard.

"Having our own studio in a building in our backyard, we had two months to record. We were able to go back to stuff, and if there was a guitar solo that wasn't knocking me out, two weeks later I could go back and hit it. Or if the whole track wasn't knocking us out, we'd go back and retrack it."

Trucks describes the album, due in February, as "much more song-centered" than his previous releases. He worked on several songs with Clapton bandmate Doyle Bramhall, while Allman Brothers guitar partner Warren Haynes co-wrote the track "Back Where I Started," which Tedeschi sings.

Trucks is now touring with Tedeschi and their Soul Stew Revival, but he hits the road with the Allmans August 12 for a 15-show run. He says that Gregg Allman, who had to cancel the group's Beacon Theater stand in New York this year in order to receive treatment for hepatitis C, is feeling better and that the group is eager to hit the road again.

Wow, if his work under major labels was rushed and still that good, this one probably will be epic! Thanks for the post...

I agree; selfishly, February seems like a loooong way off...

by recording in his own studio, i wonder what this means in terms of financials. since sony didn't have to buck up for the recording, will the dtb get a greater portion of the proceeds? will it be a sony release? or will they just use them for distribution? interesting back end stuff.

thanks Derek for the info.

Hopefully, we will hear some of the new stuff while they are out touring.

Does he need a distributor? I wonder how many copies he could sell off his website, myspace, and at live performances? I would love to see them get the full 20 bucks or so. In this business, word of good music travels fast, especially good music from Derek and company. I would think he would be in a good position to pull it off. But I am no expert in the music biz.

Great news. I do hope "Life is Crazy" will be on this release, love that song. I did ask Derek why it wasn't on Songlines, he laughed, and said something like, they forgot it....

Is the song 'Up Above My Head' on any of their previous studio releases? If not I would love to see that song on the new album. I love the way they do that song live.

I believe this was to be on Songlines too but there was no room.

Susan wrote the song and at the Longwood show, said her label would not let her record it, because it was too political.

So it is OK for Toby Keith to do Red,White and Blue and American Soldier but Susan cannot. Thank god for tapers.

Great news! What a perfect mid-winter treat. Nothing like plopping in the hot tub after a long ski with a cold drink, a fattie, and some new DTB blasting through the outdoor speakers. And a track co-written by Warren.....awesome!
