So about a week ago I started getting calls at work. From Citi Financial looking for "Mark". I keep telling them they have reached an engineering department, I have had the same number for 12 years and there has never been a Mark at this number or in the department or by that name anywhere in the company. They continue to call, different caller all the time, multiple times in the same day, and then are also leaving voice mails. On one call, I finally get a polite man who took all the information, and assured me the calls would stop. an hour later I got one.

So that was last week. This week it begins again. Citi Financial wants Marks *ss. Big Time. They believe I am hiding him, no doubt, or in truth, am him. They must believe that eventually I will wear down and fess up. So today I get this woman. I told her this was harrassment, needs to stop, and I need to talk tio her supervisor.

Not that easy, pal........ She informed me I was being recorded, and I had to answer "Yes, or No, ARE YOU MARK"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said I really was not aiding and abetting the concealment of fugitive Mark, nor was I Mark...... she wouldn't back down, and her loud interrogation was getting droned out by my loud retorts..... it all became a blur, but eventually was put through to a supervisor, after declaring my right to not answer questions.

Supervisor: Sir, I don't see your phone number anywhere in our database, but I will see the calls stop"............

OK...................

So, I am trying to think of any Marks I don't like to give Citi his number....

Any ideas on good revenge tactics? Finally admit I am Mark and tell them they can stick their mortgage? Tell them I am moving to Bermuda?

And as far as all southerners being cool, the calls are from South Carolina, hahahahha

I feel your pain bird. I get calls looking for my deadbeat ex-brother in law, mail too.

It seems to run in cycles. I guess one company sells the debt to another and it starts all over again.

Used to call back and explain they've got the wrong info and put "not at this address/return to sender" on the envelopes. Didn't help. Responding probably makes it worse. Now I just ignore the calls and trash the letters....

Tell them not to call , that this is a workplace, and to send all communication by mail to the address they have on file.

Unfortuantely my last job which I just quit last Wednesday was as a debt collector for a law firm. What an unpleasant job! We never used the tactics that Bird described but maybe thats because we were a law firm.

Bird, try telling the collector next time they call that according to the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collecting Practices Act) that you want all calls to cease and desist. Whenever we were told that we had to comply or we would have been breaking the law. Hope this helps!

Becky

Sometimes your local phone company can put a block on calls from the number, or yu can report to the local company that your are receiving harassing phone calls. But a lot of these agencies will call from different numbers, so that may not work.

In NJ a debtor can request communication only in writing, which will work for a good company, but some of the less scrupulous collection agencies don't care and will keep calling no matter what you do.

Have fun with it.

Tell them "Hold on while I get Mark."
Then lay the phone down and see how long they stay on the line.
You could always then come back on the phone with some absurd voice.
I did this the other day but I started laughing., and no it wasn't a bill collector.

It's fun when you get the calls and you can set the phone aside as you are fetching Mark. They get to hear whatever music or television you are entertaining yourself with.

Make the cat meow into the phone.

Kitty will forgive you for squeezing her paw.

Tel the bill collector that he or she sounds sexy and how you are getting turned on.

Get their name and address.

Send them a letter and copy your state Attorney general.

Tell them you are not the person they are looking for and to cease and desist from contacting you.

PS – When on the phone with them, be wary of the “good cop bad cop” routine.

I have Capital One on my ass. The wife defaulted on credit card I did not we had. We are now separated and I have a court date next month. I told them I have no knowledge of the card or how it was opened. I tell them I would like proof that I sign it. They tell me it is 90 to 120 days to get the information. I found out last month that they seized my house which is short sale.

The buyers of our marital home have agreed to eat this $4,500 past due and I can avoid this court date. This is one of four past due that she has defaulted on!

This has happened to me recently. Ignored the calls for some guy's name a long time but they continued so I answered and of course said I wasn't the person. They said they would stop calling. But they didn't. So I started to call them back and every time someone answered I said, stop calling my fu*king number very angrily and loudly and cursed them out a few times while telling them to stop harassing me and hung up. It took about three or four calls from me for them to get the picture. Haven't been called since. :-)

Beware of an outfit out of Orangeburg (?) NY called Hall And Associates.
They make a habit of buying up old and discharged debts and then find people all over the US with the same or similar sounding names and begin a very systematic harrassment of that person.
They are very vague and evasive and even though they claim to be filing suit against you in NY Superior Court, they will refuse to provide any proof.
I had a run in with them last year over a person I'd never heard of, but shares a similar sounding name with my mother, who I have power of attorney over ( the reason they gave for contacting me). That built up to 10+ calls a day even after I demanded to be served in writing and my attorney sent them a cease and desist.
I even had one of their "service reps" have the stones to call me back and give me a cussing after I hung up on her.
Took a notice of intent to sue to get them stopped.
