My last Phish thread ever..what do you people think about Phish as musicians, singers, songwriters, performers? as a unit or as induvidual? i would be fun to hear your honest opinion about Trey Anastasio,John Fishman, page and Mike gordon..

i know many folks love them and many folks dislike them to..if they reunite i think they better be on top and give the fans what they want..

I feel like I give bands a good fair shot, but I just can't get into them. If I want to hear some mellow jam-band stuff I always default to the Dead.

I disagree and agree. Sometime Trey lyrics are simple and other times Mike Gordon and and Page have written great stuff. An example is found on the Bittersweet Motel disc where they talk about them being written up in some music magazine. the article said they were wasting the time of the audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em80ViNVlHM

Waste
Don't want to be an actor pretending on the stage
Don't want to be a writer with my thoughts out on the page
Don't want to be a painter 'cause everyone comes to look
Don't want to be anything where my life's an open book

A dream it's true
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you

Don't want to be a farmer working in the sun
Don't want to be an outlaw always on the run
Don't want to be a climber reaching for the top
Don't want to be anything where I don't know when to stop

A dream it's true
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you

So if I'm inside your head
Don't believe what you might have read
You'll see what I might have said
To hear it

Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me

So if I'm inside your head
Don't believe what you might have read
You'll see what I might have said
To hear it

Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me

Come waste your time with me

I think they're a band of obviously good musicians that place more value on irony and cleverness than soul and passion.

If they reunite I will go to see them. But I don't have high expectations. I just want to experience them live which was their element. I am familiar enough with their material to recognize what I am hearing.

i think they really had passion..liste to songs like wading in the velvet sea and treys solo in that song..the live version from Hampton 98 is awesome..and songs like Waste, dirt etc..

I think Phish is the best band to come out of the 90s. I wish I got into them earlier but it took a while. Once I went to a show in 1997 I was hooked. Great musicians, great shows and great times.

Love Trey's guitar!!! Love Phish!!!

That's a great way of putting what I think too. Whereas the GD were 100% heart and soul, warts and all.

NO1TRW, I am not a fan of "literal" songwriting like that. I much prefer the "universal" approach like Hunter/Garcia stuff. That's just me though

Funny, I am listening to a sick "Harry Hood" jam right now. I like them.

Reunion late this year!

You can't match the intesity of pre 97 Phish, a band can not get much better, silly lyrics aside, I don't listen much these days, but still ... no one better.

I never did (and never will) give them a chance. After Jerry died I decided to not jump on any other wagon to replace The GD. That is what I felt like at the time Phish was attracting, sort of a crowd in search of a replacement jam band. No dis to Phish, just not a direction I will ever go.

Songs are weak, [sometimes goofy] no soul!. Jamming without strong songs gets old quick to me.

I like them and have seen them live a dozen or so times. They are very good live lots of jamming. I have seen Trey live with solo projects a few times since they split and although those shows weren't terrible, they didn't come close to a Phish show. You can't replace that kind of chemistry. I will definetly go if they reunite.

My take on Phish: Some great songs, didn't *get* the whole package. But for me, their last album was the closest I came to liking an entire release end to end of theirs. It went largely ignored. I saw a documentary on the making of the last album on VH1 and was impressed so I bought it.

What a shame someone wouldn't give a band a chance because a member of a *different* band passed away. ??? I love finding new music and bands. I don't have to follow them around the country or like everything the put out to enjoy some of their tunes.

I think it's fine not to take yourself too seriously, as long as the music is there, overall. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot else there with Phish - a bunch of guys dicking around on stage, auditory levity, ultimately empty. The musicianship was solid at times, but more often than not their covers were vomit-inducing and their songs were pretty forgettable. They had fun, but they couldn't sing for **** , and their cover of "A Day in the Life" is probably one of the worst series of sounds I have ever heard or will ever hear in my lifetime. Whatever fun they had along the way, they managed to butcher pleasing sound waves as we know them more than not. Hire someone that can carry a tune, Croaking at Toads is a masterpiece compared to the best Phish album.

Probably one of the worst semi-popular bands to come out of the 1990s.

I'm with you on that-never got their lyrics! I would go see them if they were to play again. I only saw them play New years 2000(Dec. 30th and 31st) in the middle of the everglades it was pretty cool.

Exactly...if you choose to take some dip **** 'journalist' view of Phish, a replacement of the GD, to heart, you don't care to invest enough of your own thought, mind, body and soul into the music you 'claim to love'.

They never tried, wanted or cared to be the next Grateful Dead. Who would even want to try, really. They are 100% a different band. If you attempt to compare your like or dislike of Phish based on your love of the Grateful Dead, or any other band for that matter, your missing the point. Not the point of 'Phish' the band or concept. The point of good music.

Shame on anyone for letting the death of one band determine their like of another. Pretty stupid.

Phish rock. Easily one of the best bands not from the 60s or 70s. Unreal musicians. To the Nth degree.
