Independence Day is upon us again, and nothing beats the smell of gunpowder and sulphur!

We are actually going to be betwixt two large displays this year, hanging with other adults and a few kids, so the obligatory smoke bombs, snakes and sparklers will go off, with, of course, plenty of parachutes. The kids love parachutes. Oh, and ground flowers too...no large aerial displays as we will be in a town where one rocket will get you a ticket.

Being that fireworks are illegal in some places, not everyone can partake, of course.

But, for all the fellow pyros on HTW, whatcha gonna blow up?

Our stash is almost gone, I need a Southern vacation.

Fireworks are illegal in NY, go figure.

They tax the sh!t out of everything else, I figure it would be a huge moneymaker.

Illegal in MA too but they set up tents on the NH border. Legal to sell them in NH but you need to take them out of state.

So every year there are news reports of the MA state police busting tons of folks coming back over the border. I won't get into how messed up that is considering our other border problems.

When I was a kid we had to go into the North End of Boston to get quality fireworks. You know, the kind that came out of some guys trunk in an alleyway...

It's funny, I used to buy stuff when I was 13 in Michigan that is illegal in now in our same state. Luckily I travel out of state for work so I happened to pick up some "real" fireworks today. Bottle rockets, black cats, roman candles and those awesome tanks. Here's to being a kid again!

Ah the stupid things we used to do with them....

Remember one time a couple of friends of mine thought it would be cool to drop firecrackers into an old 1/2 gallon glass tonic bottle. It was cool until the bottle exploded. Of course we were standing right over it. Had cuts everywhere. Pretty sure I had a hard time explaining that one.

Bottle rocket fights in the park. Our suburban version of gang warfare I guess. Can't believe nobody lost an eye.

We also used to build models all winter just so we could blow them up around the fourth.

With over 1,000 fires burning in California, fireworks are being cancelled by cities this year, and personal use is highly discouraged. There are usually lots of them going off in Santa Cruz, though, and I expect that to continue, with lots more fires.

Now we are talking. I could post 100's of stories on this. I grew up on a lake so we used to jump in and get wet and then have roman candle and bottle rocket fights. It hurts when you get hit with a rocket right when it blows up, also makes your ears ring for a while.

I don't have any fireworks this year, but I may go the 4th of July celebration the city of Louisville is having. Fireworks following a concert line up of Mofro, Los Lobos and George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelics

m80's inside of a model of an battleship makes a nice explosion. we usually poured plastic cement
on the model and lit it up also. allegedly

pyros

and I had nothing to do with that 3 alarm fire in the vacant lot. some other pyro trying to
make gunpowder with his chemistry set.

I used to work at the pool in the city park where they shot off the display. So I had a prime set
we closed the pool and cleaned up, then hung out for the fireworks.

I shot off my fair share as a kid, and a few as an adult, used to play bottle rocket russian roulette - light it, throw it up in the air and spin it and see where it goes.

now the bad news, my youngest son was hit with a roman candle ball at his aunt's a few years ago. Major burn on his stomach, still badly scarred. About 6" across. God forbid it had hit him in the face.

Please be careful.............

Greg

I'll second this! I'll let the pros do it and I'll watch--this year in Durham, it appears...

Fireworks were illegal in GA but that did not stop me while growing up from loading up in SC on family vacations. Then cherry bombs and M-80s were outlawed, but if you asked the counter guy nicely, he might find you some. I used to toss both into the river; the cherry bombs floated and the M-80s sunk (like a depth charge!). It was all fun and games until the fish started floating up. Now I feel bad. And I'm told M-80s would do a real number on a hated neighbor's mailbox! Sorry Mr Scruggs.

Cherry bombs and ash cans were great fun!

When we do the Southern shopping trip now, we get more rocket stuff than big bang noisemakers.

One of the best ones we got last time was a block of 250 rockets that went off one after another, rapid fire.

Excellent purchase!

And some of the bigger aerial shells give a good return on the $.

I always buy a few hundred dollars worth of stuff and spend a few hrs out back setting them off with the rest of the neighborhood. It is something I was heavy into since I was a kid, and I am lucky to have all my fingers after some of the things we used to concoct.
As long as we don't go too late the cops don't bother us. It gets loud and colorful around here from 9-11 pm.

I like fireworks just fine . . . but I've never been a fan of taking the money I've earned and burning it for amusement. If my city council members in their wisdom allocate a portion of my tax money for a public display (which they do, and it's a huge one and totally kicks ass), I'll certainly enjoy it.
