After hearing about Linnie and now Lefty, moving south, and having moved to Alabama from Ohio myself, I have compiled my "Top 10 List" of reasons to move south from up north.

So, with tongue firmly placed in cheek, and a nod to David Letterman, here is my
"Top 10 Reasons to move south":

#10- You can pee off your back porch, even if you live in town!
#9- You can now grow that mullet that you have always wanted!
#8- Grammer? Fuggedaboudit! You can talk ever how yount to!
#7- You now get to listen to the John Boy and Billy Big Show instead of Bob and Tom.
#6- No more wisconsin chedder cheese. From now on it's head cheese and souse.
#5- No more of that pesky high alcohol beer. No no. In Alabama you can't get any beer higher than 6%. Thank God....
#4- Wanee IS closer!
#3- You get to celebrate Robt. E. Lee's birthday!
#2- You will LOVE being referred to as "Yankee" over and over and over and over...
(Maybe even "Damned Yankee." Woohoo!)

And, the number one reason to move south, especially if you are a musician,
ALOT more requests for Freebird! And, you will actually have to play it!

Feel free to compile your own top 10 or add to mine.

Excuse me now, I have to go watch NASCAR!!

Can't argue with any of those reasons. Now that my department's chief is in Norcross, GA, I may be house hunting. Like to stay in Philly to be close to Beacon, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Only 10 yrs from retiring (I hope).

1. When you order some grits with your
breakfast the waitress actually knows what
the hell you're talking about.
2. Sugar in your tea is strongly encouraged.
3. Your hunger for boiled peanuts no longer
has to be kept secret.

Wonder who have posted actually have live in the south (besides BDOB)? Hate to say this post comes across as somewhat condensending. It's kinda of weird, people who like the Allman Brothers Band, but still think that most southerner are somewhat "inbred" and dumb. Can anybody get beyond the typical southern "cliches"? Kind of doubt it.

Ahhhh - let 'em think it. The ones that are that dumb NEED to stay right where they're at. A lot of them have moved down here, and many of them seem to like it. Got a lot of transplant friends.

I've been all over America, and I've got to say that stupidity is pretty much spread out in equal numbers just about anywhere you go!

I move up to Northern Virginia/Manassas in the early '80s. Back then it was rural, and southern and laid back, nowadays it might as well be New Jersey. Anymore you got to go south of Fredericksburg, to find southern culture. Get a bunch of northern moving in, and you'll lose what best about the south. Northerner "love" the south, but they want to make it "where they came from". Slowly, but surely they're killing what's "southern" and making it just like anywhere else. And that's sad. The south is a very special place, and that's because the people (both black and white) have so much soul. But unfortunately America is getting so much "homogenized" that we're losing what made each region special.

I moved from Birmingham Alabama to Jacksonville Florida in 1984 and to my shock I moved in to a bunch of Yankees. The born Jacksonville people called me a Northerner. Now we got more Yankees moving North to get away from South Florida. And we got Mexicans moving way North.

I am confused!

Or if your girlfriend lives far enough out in the woods you can pee off the front porch like I did this weekend.

what was so wonderful about the allman brothers was that they broke down barriers. they incorporated all kinds of music, black and white. miles davis and bill monroe. lester and earl and earl, howlin' wolf and sonny boy williamson.

their grace destroys southern stereotypes. they were visionary in their quest to make beautiful music and very much socially important in the fact they were an integrated band from the south playing music that rose above social boundaries and shattered harmful archetypes.

bands like the brothers, booker t and the mgs and a lot of the soul music of that period has an importance and social significance that cannot be overstated.

That is all very true and well stated.

Though they sometimes have their own personal failings and vices, the one thing that I've always admired about musicians is that more often than not they are and have been pretty much colorblind.

With them, the question has never been "what color are you?" Rather, it's been "can you play?"

We'd all be a lot better off if the world could manage to adopt that standard...

That's right. But Lefty's moving to Bama. He'd be best off declaring for the Tide or Tigers. He'll only be hated by half the state, which is better than by the whole state!

Massive flashback to my youth. Being in Orangeburg (or maybe
even Holly Hill) S.C. with my father (who was from S.C.) and buying
boiled peanuts from a street vendor. My father used to make them even
after he moved to Ohio.

You haven't lived till you've have boiled pinders.
