Ok guys first of all.All i can say is OMG.I was completely floored by last night's show.
I have been a Warren fan since 89 and a Mule fan since 95.Let me tell ya as many times as i have seen them this show was incredibly amazing!Not just musically but the setlist totally took me back to the 90's.I feel very blessed that we got to experience a full set of old school Mule.I heard everything i wanted to hear and then some.The 3 piece sounded great i was very proud of Andy he just skated through that 1st set like a breathe of fresh air.

Most of you have already seen the setlist.As many times as i have seen them i had never heard them play I Shall Return at previous shows.I know they have played it but not at any shows i have attended.
And closing with 30 days In The Hole.OMG! somebody get me a pill!!

Oh and here is the best part as we were leaving the venue i saw a crowd and i be damned if there was Warren taking photos with fans.I wanted to give him space so i just waited.I have waited almost 20 years to meet him and i wasn't about to walk away.So finally i just walked up to him and shook his hand and said Thank You Warren for a phenomenal setlist tonight and thank you for being there for me all these years you are my all time favorite.He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me and said thank you man i really appreciate people like you.I then patted him on the back and said God Bless you Warren and he replied back the same and you could tell he was very sincere.He looks at you in the eyes when he's talking that to me is someone who is really in tune.There is nothing worse than talking to somebody and them looking away.I would have understood if he had but he took a moment.What a very nice man i am glad i finally got to meet him.

I really wish all of you guys could have been there last night it was such a special evening with the 3 piece.All i can say is it kicked f*****g ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6.28 (POWER TRIO) & 6.29 AVAILABLE ON MULETRACKS

The shows from 6.28 in VENTURA, CA and 6.29 from LOS ANGELES, CA are now live. Highlights from these shows include the entire 6.28 show (during which Gov't Mule performed as a Power Trio for the first time since 2000) and the Bob Weir sit in on All Along The Watchtower from 6.29 in Los Angeles. Head to www.muletracks.com to download these shows.

~~~~~~~~~~
Are you still missing larger than life? Sounds like it was a great show. So glad you got to meet Warren Warren. :-)
I need to get the Mule Tracks of the show.
don't get me wrong, i enjoy All Along the Watchtower occasionally, but it seems to have become the lowest common denominator when someone sits in, esp Weir. didn't Ratdog sit in w/ ABB last year and that was one of the tunes? DMB plays it frequently too. try something else that nobody's doing!!!!!!
Angel you have not said much about how you liked the show, after your question about being responsible, what we all wonder is did the trio with Andy Hess sound like the trio did with Woody, were they able to come pretty close to some of those old ass kicking shows in the late 90s? You are right the Mule Tracks ae a must and as soon as I get home I am starting the download. Blue Jean Blues is my favorite ZZ Top tune. Great setlist.
They recreated the old school Mule.I think they should do it more often!!
I am of the mind that the band is a foursome and though they can be anything they (Warren) wants, their existing configuration gives them lots of options and gives them a nice broad repertoire from which to create all different kinds of shows. And anyway, I think Danny is a keeper even if I am not thrilled with some of his B3 work. I mean who else can play a trumpet, guitar and the keyboards and has a pretty terrific handle on sound effects? Not many players I can think of, and Mule needs all the talents he brings to them (musically speaking as well as other talents).
I have listened to the Ventura show and I think the set was still a departure from the way the Mule sounded with Allen. There was a raw intensity with Allen and they all were younger, so of course the raw energy would not exactly be there. The Ventura set was much more sophisticated than anything old school mule did, not just because of the absence of Allen but because both Matt and Warren have grown, both as performers and within their chosen art. Andy is a more melodic player than Allen and while he uses power he uses subtly as a techniques as well. I don't think there is much Andy can't play and his jazz work is exceptional. And while he may not be an "in the pocket" player like George Porter, he has a wide variety of grooves to choose from. And that I find very interesting.
I think the band hit the note both as a threesome and foursome. And I liked the set lists of both portions of the show and think they both were well thought out. I would like to see Warren take more risks like the one he did in Ventura. I especially would love to hear a few acoustic shows. Matt has come a long way from playing the pots and pans in that 99 Brandy House show. :-)
Warren and Angel, The first eight times I saw Govt Mule was with Allen Woody on bass so I am digging the Ventura Mule Tracks which sound, as Angel put it, more sophisticated and less raw, in fact, I would say that at this point, they are a better quartet than trio. Now there repetoire also includes many songs written for four, not three, players. A band has to evolve and change or run the risk of growing stale. (Ok, so Warren admits to being there and Angel is still trying to remember if she was. LOL!)
Did anyone notice that the Mule Tracks are mistagged. I guess this would only apply to the MP3 version.
The old school power trio was something special, but it can't be replicated without Woody. I'm afraid those days are just over. Andy is highly skilled and I love his playing, but Woody was a monsterous force. Warren, Woody and Matt had such a heavy and tight chemistry. More of a raw sound as some have described. The bass was much more up front and in you're face. At this point I love them as a foursome. They are as tight as a wistle and as versitile as you can get. Unpredictable setlists, unbelievable jams, and you never know who will show up to guest. Old School or New School, it's all good to me!!!
I will say amen to that too. I love the fact that they are doing more old Mule stuff. That setlist is awesome whether it was a trio or four piece. I am one of the few who would like to see the Mule cut down on the covers. Not totally cut them out, but they have built up a nice little catalog of their own stuff and lots of it gets passed by.
I agree, the more originals the better. On the other hand, when they are in Toronto and play some Neil Young {Southern Man, Rockin' In The Free World or Cortez The Killer} that's pretty awesome too. The place goes nuts!
