A while back, I posted about my younger sister having just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. About two weeks later, my older sister Wanda was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. Her prognosis is not as good as my younger sister's (Cathy).

Cathy's husband has a very good health insurance plan and she goes to doctors for regular check-ups. Her cancer was found in its very early stages. This and her overall good attitude are really helping her in her fight. Not to slight her illness, but I feel very positive about where she is and where she is headed. I firmly believe that she'll win this fight.

On the other hand, due to various factors, Wanda hasn't had health insurance until the past year or so. As such, she hasn't gone in for regular check-ups and such. On top of this, Wand has been a heavy smoker since she was about 15 years old.

At first, we were told that Wanda's cancer was a "slow growing" form and that it was not in her Lymph Nodes. Further and recent biopsies have revealed that her cancer has indeed entered her Lymph Nodes and is spreading. The best news we're getting now is that, "it hasn't gotten into her bones".

Wanda's attitude is still that of a fighter. She told me last night that she has too much to live for to let a stupid disease take her down. Specifically, she mentioned her three beautiful daughters and her six amazing grandchildren as reasons and motivation to fight. She said she's ready to kick some cancer @ss.

Part of my reason for sharing this news is to seek your prayers and support for both of my sisters. I have seen the power of peach prayer.

Another reason for this post is to urge all of y'all who smoke cigarettes to find a way to give them up. When I shared Wanda's story last night, someone told me just how addictive and hard to quit cigarettes are. I thought for a moment about three other folks that I know who were diagnosed with Lung Cancer in recent years. "It's amazing how quick they can give it up when they hear that "C" word", I said.

I don't mean to nag or bug, but I wouldn't mention all this if I didn't care. There are many folks from this site that I have come to be true and great friends with over the past few years. Some of y'all are smokers. Believe me when I say that I appreciate your personal life choices. I do love y'all enough to be concerned about your health.

Another thing to think about - this really goes beyond your immediate and current health. Think "further on up the road" for a moment. Like my sister, Wanda - you might one day have some grandchildren who you'll want to watch grow. Beyond that, you'll probably want to remain mobile in your golden years. My mother can not walk across a room without gasping for breath and clutching at her chest. She has 40 years of two-packs a day to thank for this. This and realizing that she stands a real good chance of out-liveing three of her four children is also breaking her heart.

Hey! Sorry about this Friday the 13th lecture.

Sorry to hear that Rusty and I hear the lecture from my sister also.

She is currently doing chemo and very sick also. She beat it 17 years ago and has to go through it again. Never had a smoke in her life either.

I hate cancer.

Rusty, your sisters are on my prayer list. You're a good brother, brother.

I'll echo the sentiments that there is no good reason to smoke. I wish I never touched the first cigarette at age 11. I haven't smoked in 24 years, and my dad quit smoking 16 years ago after a 45 year 2 to 3 pack a day habit. He's 75 now and I'm hoping that he'll have another 10 quality years before God calls him home.

I'd like to second Rusty's call to all the Peach Heads who smoke to consider quitting. It'll improve your health and you'll have a lot more cabbage in your wallet.

Rusty ... you can be assured of positive vibes coming across the pond in the direction of your sisters ... I wish them all the best in their fight against this evil disease.

On the giving up smoking front, I am right behind you, like Dave I too had my first cigarette at age 11 and continued to smoke until I was 46 ... this month I am celebrating 10 years of having given up the evil weed and I too wish I had done it sooner.

Love, Prayers, Strength and encouragement out to your sisters and the entire family Rusty. I wish they would put the $$ up on smokes so people couldn't afford them and be forced to quit! My mom is a smoker and we are always after her about it... she won't listen... My dad did quit 5 years ago. I sure work hard at getting my mom too also...

Best of luck with treatment for Cathy and Wanda.

Cancer sucks! My aunt is headed for round three of treatment and my uncle just found out he has cancer tumors in his stomach. Last night he said he has to decide now on radiation or chemo or nothing.
Keegan who mostly posts on Dickey's site is a young 27 and fighting the fight too.

We did the relay for life walk last month and it was a very powerful experience.

Keeping Cathy and Wanda in the (((VIBES)))

I wish God would damn cancer.

Dammit.

God, are you listening? "Of course He is, He is just saying, "No!".

Dammit.

I will keep your sisters in my thoughts and prayers Rusty.

One more comment...We are all at risk for lung cancer since we frequent places (bars, concerts) where we breathe second hand smoke for hours! I really do worry about my musician friends and their constant exposure to second hand smoke.

Think about it! I am all for smoke free venues.

The county I reside in (Columbia County, Evans, GA) has a smoke free ordinance for restaurants and bars. Restaurant/bar combos can light up at 10PM, but smoking is limited to the bar area. I prefer smoke free too, but as long as there is some sort of ventilation, I can deal with it. I always appreciate a thoughtful smoker, like Bluedad, who will only light up if we are stopped and out of the car or truck when we are road dawgin' to a show/festival.

Prayers and Positive vibes Rusty. I personally have never smoked, never saw the facination with it. In my latest Men's Health Magazine there was a great article. Please read when you have a moment.

agreed, cancer effin' sucks... i just checked my email this morning & found out my aunt got diagnosed with breast cancer yesterday... you're sisters & your family are in my prayers as well.
on a side note, i've never smoked....so glad i didn't pick up that nasty habit & at this point couldn't afford it anyway! they just raised the ny state tax on theirs last week & premiums go for 7 bucks a pack & 60 a carton here now. i live just of a reservation so they are cheaper there, but either way, i have much better things i'd prefer to spend my money on for sure! wishing everyone who needs to & wants to quit all the luck to kick it!

Speaking of cancer, it's been a hell of a year in my family. My sister Lisa is currently completing chemo treatments for her second go around with breast cancer. My sister-in-law had a double mastectomy last Thursday and begins Chemo in a few weeks due to breast cancer. To top that off, my co-worker just found out yesterday that her father has cancer in his diaphram area. It seems I hear of someone new being diagnosed every week. It never f*cking ends!

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers Rusty. I smoked for several years, have recently quit, it's not always easy. My dad passed away 11 years ago from lung cancer, and that didn't even cause me to try to quit at the time.

lefty, I don't know if you've ever smoked, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is the most powerful addictiion I ever faced. Quitting is so easy I think I accomplished that about 70 times during my addictive years. Heck, I was so sick of them at one time I threw an entire pack out the car window. Stopped at the very next Quik Mart for another.
When my Dad passed away I dedicated my quitting smoking to him. Didn't work. I tried to honor the man I adored most in my life by stopping and couldn't pull it off. The addiction to many is that strong. There are those who can stop today and never look back. There are also those whose bones itch when they can't get the tobacco fix. It's a powerful and horrible addiction.
Somehow I mustered the courage and fortitude to kick that habit and it literally took about three months of agony before the cravings went away. I'm now 16 years tobacco free and I am nothing but thankful for whatever finally gave me the strength to quit.

Rusty, so sorry to hear about Wanda and Cathy. Sending comforting thoughts from the FishCamp to your family.

Sorry to hear about this, Rusty. I just lost a sister to cancer. I hope things turn out well for your sisters.

It is hard to believe that something as deadly as cigarettes are such an institutionalized part of our society.
